Pennock out to avenge league defeat with cup run
After topping the scoring charts, Port Talbot Town have failed to find the back of the net in their last two league games but this Saturday the side are in Welsh Cup action at Rhyl and the match offers Port Talbot an opportunity to prove that last weekend’s eight goal defeat at Llanelli was nothing but a one-off freak result. “Our heads went down and everyone was downbeat after the game”, said Pennock. “It will take a while to get over the result, but it is up to us now to pull together and put things right against Rhyl this Saturday.” Gareth Phillips and Chad Bond will both miss the match through suspension.

Wales take on their Italian counterparts in Italy on Wednesday, 14th November and has named ten Principality Welsh Premier League players in his squad of sixteen for the match. Port Talbot Town defender Lee Surman and striker Chad Bond are both included in the squad with local youngster Craig Jones of Llanelli also named. Llanelli 8-0 Port Talbot Town - The Aftermath
As the dust settles on Friday’s humiliating night of football, we ask where did it all go wrong? Despite an impressive scoring record this season, clean sheets have been few and far between and the discipline record of the side as been the complete opposite to last season when Port Talbot almost landed a place in the UEFA Cup through the UEFA Fair Play Award. While these are two factors to consider as the side conceded eight and were reduced to nine men, the half-time substitutions of top scorer Martin Rose and record transfer Lee John have also been a talking point since the defeat following the subsequent second half collapse. The test for manager Tony Pennock now however is to move on from this defeat and pick his side up for next weekend’s Welsh Cup 3rd round match at Rhyl. Another hard test no doubt but one that we can rise to and show that Friday was a nothing but a one-off freak result.

Celts claim comfortable win despite Clement heroics
Our Under-19 side were knocked out of the FAW Welsh Youth Cup on Sunday as Cardiff College Celts claimed a 4-1 victory at the RE/MAX Stadium. The visitors are managed by former Port Talbot Town players Lee Skyrme and Hayden Fleming and were good value for their convincing victory with Port Talbot goalkeeper Lloyd Clement impressing with a series of fine saves. Ben James scored the only goal for Port Talbot to keep up his impressive record in front of goal this season.

Len Llewellyn
Everyone at Port Talbot Town Football Club would like to offer their sympathy to former player and 1st team manager Steve Llewellyn and his family on the sad news that his father Len passed away last week. Len was a popular figure at the club for many years before suffering from ill health and was a regular at both home and away games when Steve was involved with Port Talbot Town. Len will be well remembered by everyone who knew him during his many years with the club.

Welsh Premier League round-up
League leaders Llanelli claimed the result of the weekend with their 8-0 victory over Port Talbot Town on Friday night. Rhys Griffiths scored a hat-trick against his former club to take his Welsh Premier League goal tally to 100. Carmarthen also impressed with a 2-0 win at Aberystwyth while Rhyl eased past NEWI Cefn Druids 4-1 and Welshpool Town scored twice in the last ten minutes through Chris Venables to defeat Llangefni Town 3-0. On Newtown pulled off a surprise 3-2 win at Haverfordwest with Tommy Mutton and a brace from Marc Lloyd-Williams claiming the three points. Bangor City scored twice I the last two minutes of the match to defeat bottom of the table Porthmadog at Farrer Road while Caernarfon claimed a 2-1 win at Airbus UK Broughton. Champions The New Saints were 3-1 winners over Neath Athletic thanks to goals from Jamie Wood and a double from Scott Ruscoe while Caersws were narrowly defeated by Connah’s Quay Nomads 4-3 in the highest scoring game of the day. Reduced entry for families was offered as a promotion by Principality and while crowds for the weekend were above average, only 92 people watched Airbus UK lose 2-1 to Caernarfon compared to the 514 at Llanelli.

26th October 2007
Nine men, eight goals. The Ultimate Humiliation.
Llanelli defeated Port Talbot Town 8-0 on Friday night. Words cannot describe the embarrassment of such a result. There can be no excuses. Port Talbot were reduced to nine men as both Gareth Phillips and Chad Bond were shown straight red cards in the second half as the game slipped further and further away with every mistake. Former Port Talbot Town midfielder Andrew Mumford gave Llanelli a two goal lead at half-time but despite a short spell of pressure before half-time from Port Talbot, Llanelli ran riot in the second half and scored a further six goals as the substitutions of top scorer Martin Rose and record transfer Lee John at the break seemed to inspire the home side more than the visitors. How manager Tony Pennock picks his side up now for two crucial Welsh Cup and FAW Premier Cup games after such a performance and the subsequent suspensions will be an unenviable task but one he must take on if the club are to salvage something from this season. Llanelli did not deserve to win 8-0, their second half display should have seen them score a lot more. This was the ultimate insult.

25th October 2007
Pennock’s solid defence out to keep Griff quiet
Last Saturday’s 0-0 draw at home to Bangor City left Port Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock praising his side with a special mention for his defence. “It was an entertaining game and our defence looked solid”, said Pennock. “We are making progress now”. Lee Surman returns from suspension in midweek to partner captain Matthew Rees and they will take on one of the Welsh Premier League’s top strikers as they come up against Rhys Griffiths. The former Port Talbot striker scored twice past Pennock inside eight minutes in midweek but a much stronger defensive display is expected at Stebonheath on Friday night. Former Wales, Leicester and Leeds United midfielder Matthew Jones is expected to be missing from the Llanelli side through injury although former Port Talbot midfielder Andrew Mumford is likely to be included in the starting line-up. Port Talbot also welcome back Liam McCreesh from suspension and Matthew Thompson who lasted 75 minutes in his midweek comeback match from injury. Kick off is at 7.30pm with a supporters coach leaving the RE/MAX Stadium at 5.45pm.

Budding red Rose is now in full Blue bloom
Striker Martin Rose returns to the club for who he made his debut in the Welsh Premier League for on Friday when Port Talbot Town travel to league leaders Llanelli. Rose played 23 games for the Reds in 2004-2005, scoring seven goals and showed his quality in front of goal the following season when he scored three in just five appearances for the since relegated Cardiff Grange Quins. A move to Port Talbot Town followed in 2006 as manager Wayne Davies looked to fill the void left by Rhys Griffiths move to Llanelli and Rose has been a consistent goalscorer at the RE/MAX Stadium ever since. Rose is currently the club’s top scorer with eleven goals from thirteen starts and after sitting out Tuesday’s Challenge Cup defeat to Llanelli, the former Southampton youngster will be looking to get back on the goal trail on Friday night. A supporters coach is available for the match leaving the RE/MAX Stadium at 5.45pm.

Llanelli cruise through Friday night warm-up
Welsh Premier League leaders Llanelli cruised into the quarter finals of the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup on Tuesday night with a comfortable 5-2 win over Port Talbot Town at the RE/MAX Stadium. Both sides now face in each other in a massive league match at Llanelli on Friday and both sides made a number of changes to their starting line-up’s for this warm-up match. Manager Tony Pennock named himself in goal with captain Matthew Rees and top scorer Martin Rose both rested ahead of Friday while Lee Surman and Liam McCreesh missed the match through suspension. Llanelli started the game in dramatic style with former Port Talbot striker Rhys Griffiths scoring twice in the opening few minutes before Paul Wanless added a third inside fifteen minutes. Chad Bond pulled two goals back for Port Talbot but changes across the backline made the home defence vulnerable and Llanelli extended their lead with a second goal for Wanless and a strike from Craig Jones. A supporters coach will be leaving the RE/MAX Stadium at 5.45pm on Friday for the league match at Llanelli costing just £5. Kick off at Stebonheath is at 7.30pm.

22nd October 2007
Suspensions start with Challenge Cup double
Port Talbot Town will be without two influential players on Tuesday night when they take on Llanelli at the RE/MAX Stadium in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup. Defender Lee Surman has picked up five bookings this season and automatically misses the match and he will be joined on the sideline by Liam McCreesh after he also picked up his fifth booking of the season against Neath Athletic two weeks ago. Midfielder Gareth Phillips has also collected five bookings this season but the timing of his latest booking means he will miss the Welsh Cup 3rd round match at Rhyl instead. Manager Tony Pennock is expected to make other changes to his side despite Port Talbot having an outside chance of qualifying for the next round of the competition as he prepares his squad for Friday’s Welsh Premier League match at Llanelli.

Pennock and Powell - “We should have won!”
Both Port Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock and Bangor City manager Neville Powell thought their sides should have won in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at the RE/MAX Stadium. “Bangor are a good side and I expect them to finish in the top five or six, so I’m not too disappointed,” said Pennock. “I thought our performance was good and we had enough chances in the opening 20 minutes to seal it. But we kept only our second clean sheet of the season, we have taken 11 points from five unbeaten matches and are still unbeaten at home.” Powell also thought his side had enough chances to win the match. “We are starting to gel, but there’s a long road ahead,” said Powell. “Two successive clean sheets and four points against tough southern opposition shows we are heading in the right direction. I felt we were desperately unlucky not to get all three points as, after a shaky start, we had the better of the exchanges and the chances.”.

22nd October 2007

Academy win for Under-16‘s at Oxford United
Our Under-16 Academy side claimed a superb 2-1 win over Football League club Oxford United on Sunday. The other two sides did not fare as well however as our Under-12 side were comfortably defeated 7-0 and our Under-14 side were also heavily defeated 7-1.

Welsh Premier League round-up
Llanelli remained at the top of the table with maximum points from the highest scoring match of the day as they ran out 5-3 winners at Newtown despite conceding a goal in the first minute of the match. Carmarthen claimed the most convincing win of the day with a 4-1 home win over NEWI Cefn Druids for who Timmy Edwards made his 400th Welsh Premier League appearance. In the live television match Rhyl were held at home by Welshpool as Ross Stephens scored an 87th minute equaliser for the visitors while champions The New Saints scored three second half goals to win at Llangefni Town. Haverfordwest and Aberystwyth both claimed 2-1 away victories at Caernarfon and Connah’s Quay respectively while Port Talbot Town were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Bangor City. A double from Andy Hill gave Neath another three points as they defeated Airbus UK Broughton 2-1 at Llandarcy Park while at the bottom of the table Caersws claimed a vital 1-0 win at Porthmadog to leapfrog their opponents and push the managerless side to the bottom of the table. Sion Meredith scored the only goal of the match in the second minute.

20th October 2007
Frustration as missed chances drop points
Port Talbot Town were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Bangor City on Saturday despite creating a number of chances. Chad Bond made his return to the starting line-up in place of Kerry Morgan and created a  number of chances for himself in the opening half but could not the vital breakthrough in what was a frustrating afternoon for Tony Pennock’s side. Despite having the better of the early exchanges, Bangor also had enough chances to win the match but also struggled in front of goal at the vital time. The draw moves Port Talbot down to 8th place in the Welsh Premier League table ahead of Friday’s match at league leaders Llanelli although the side are back in action at home on Tuesday night when Llanelli visit the RE/MAX Stadium in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup.

19th October 2007
Pennock - “Bangor will be our biggest test so far”
Port Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock comes up against the side he predicted for a successful season when Bangor City visit the RE/MAX Stadium on Saturday. Despite their lowly league position, Bangor claimed a superb 2-0 victory at Llanelli last weekend and will be confident of building on that result. “Bangor will be our biggest test so far,” said Pennock. “I tipped them to do really well this season and after a slow start they are starting to gel.” New manager Neville Powell took a number of players to Bangor from Connah’s Quay Nomads in the Summer but they have only won three of their nine league games. Pennock meanwhile is delighted with how his team have turned their season around in recent weeks. “We have really picked up in both league and cups,” added Pennock. “The league table looks much better now but we need to keep the momentum going”. Kick off is at 2.30pm

18th October 2007
Rose between two thorns in selection headache
Strikers Kerry Morgan and Chad Bond have become a thorn in the side of Port Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock as he decides who will possibly partner top scorer Martin Rose upfront against Bangor City on Saturday. Morgan has been in superb form since joining the club on-loan from Swansea City with nine goals but a quiet performance in last weekend’s 4-1 win at Caersws was taken advantage of by his replacement Chad Bond who scored a superb individual goal to round off a strong and committed display to show his desire to win back his place in the starting line-up. It is the second tough decision of the week for Pennock who must also leave someone out of the squad as midfielder Matthew Thompson returns from injury. Bangor City manager Neville Powell will be confident after his side claimed a superb 2-0 victory at Llanelli last weekend with Ashley Stott scoring twice. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

18th October 2007
Baz still waiting for the chance to shine
Young midfielder Scott Barrow has rarely featured for Port Talbot Town this season but the talented left sided player impressed last week as his Swansea College side cruised to a 13-0 victory over St. Joseph’s. Baz grabbed two of the goals in the win but his club football has been hugely frustrating having spent more time on the bench or in the stands than on the field under manager Tony Pennock. Wayne Davies brought Scott to the club just over a year ago after his impressive performances for Briton Ferry in the Welsh League as a 16 year-old following his release from Swansea City. While chances were limited for Barrow initially, his talent shone through and he became a regular fixture in the side after an impressive debut against The New Saints in a 2-1 home win against the champions. Three goals in 23 games later, including a starting place in the 2-1 FAW Premier Cup win over Swansea City, prompted the club to tie him up on an 18 month contract as football league scouts began to see the talent in the youngster. It has been a different story this season though with only four substitute appearances to his name, leaving Barrow as frustrated as the many fans at the club who would love to see him again offered a run in the side to show his worth.

17th October 2007
Town to avenge five year wait and five goal defeat
Port Talbot Town take on Bangor City at the RE/MAX Stadium on Saturday and Tony Pennock will be looking to his sides recent league form to hand them their first home victory over Bangor City since January 2002 when Port Talbot won 1-0. Clayton Blackmore scored an own goal that day but returned as manager for Bangor City and recorded two consecutive wins at Port Talbot in the last two seasons, the heaviest coming last year as his side ran out 5-0 winners. Neville Powell is now in charge of the citizens and while they have not had the best of starts to the season, their experienced side claimed an impressive 2-0 victory at league leaders Llanelli last weekend and they come into the match high in confidence. Midfielder Matthew Thompson is expected to be available for Port Talbot after a hamstring injury leaving Tony Pennock with a fully fit squad to choose from. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

16th October 2007
Kerry on target for Swans in first win of the season
Striker Kerry Morgan scored for Swansea City Reserves on Monday night as they claimed their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory at Forest Green Rovers. Kerry is currently on-loan at Port Talbot Town from the Swans and has scored nine goals in all competitions to become Port Talbot’s second highest scorer this season behind Martin Rose. Chris Jones scored the other goal for Swansea in the victory that also saw former Bangor City captain Owain Tudor-Jones and Darren Way play 90 minutes of football on their return from injury. Manager and former Port Talbot Town coach Colin Pascoe was delighted with the result that moves Swansea City off the bottom of the Pontins Holidays Combination Wales & West Reserve Division. “The whole team played very well”, said Pascoe. “We should have scored a couple more”. Swansea City Reserves play all their home games at the RE/MAX Stadium and are home next on the 14th November against Plymouth Argyle. As part of the link-up between the two clubs, all Swansea City season ticket holders are entitled to reduced admission to all Port Talbot Town home games.

14th October 2007
Port Talbot top scoring charts with four goal win
Goals from Lee John, Chad Bond and a double from Martin Rose not only sealed a 4-1 victory at Caersws on Saturday, they also put Tony Pennock’s side top of the league scoring charts by becoming the only side in the league to reach the 20 goal mark. The win moved Port Talbot into sixth place in the Welsh Premier League but the goal scoring form of the side is not just restricted to league action, in the three cup competitions Port Talbot can add another 15 goals to that tally to make it an incredible 35 goals from just 14 competitive games this season. Martin Rose currently heads the scoring charts with 11 goals following his double strike on Saturday.

14th October 2007
Town tire as Aberaman take maximum points
Our Under-19 side suffered a 2-1 home defeat to ENTO Aberaman on Sunday. Striker Ben James gave Port Talbot the lead from the penalty spot but the visitors came back with two goals in the last twenty minutes to take the points.

14th October 2007
Welsh Premier League round-up
In the game of the weekend The New Saints beat Rhyl 1-0 through a goal from Jamie Wood to move into second place and further close the gap on Llanelli to a single point after they were surprisingly beaten at home 2-0 by Bangor City. Ashley Stott scored both Bangor goals in what was the shock of the weekend. On Friday night Neath claimed all three points at Haverfordwest with a 2-1 victory while also on Friday NEWI Cefn Druids impressed with a superb 5-2 win over Connah’s Quay Nomads. On-loan Wrexham striker Jamie Reed grabbed a brace for Aberystwyth as they defeated Porthmadog while Llangefni Town surprised Airbus UK Broughton by claiming a 3-1 win away from home. Goals from Marc Lloyd-Williams, Tommy Mutton and Glenn Tolley gave Newtown maximum points at home to Caernarfon while Port Talbot were 4-1 winners at Caersws with Martin Rose scoring twice. Welshpool came back from being two goals down to draw 2-2 at home to Carmarthen Town, Sacha Walters and Danny Thomas had given the visitors the lead before a double from Aden Shannon either side of half-time handed Welshpool a share of the points.

13th October 2007
Goal spree continues with Bond, John and Rose
Port Talbot Town further increased their goals for column on Saturday with a 4-1 win at bottom of the table Caersws. Lee John opened the scoring after only twelve seconds as Kerry Morgan set him up from the kick off before Martin Rose added another two either side of a superb individual goal from Chad Bond in the second half to make the game safe. It was not as comfortable a victory as the scoreline suggests however as Caersws were denied by the frame of the goal on a number of occasions and were able to pull a goal back with five minutes remaining. The win moves Port Talbot into sixth place despite the victory being manager Tony Pennock’s first away points of the season. The only negative point of the day was an early booking for Gareth Phillips, it was the midfielders fifth booking of the season and he will now serve a one match suspension against Rhyl in the 3rd round of the Welsh Cup.

11th October 2007
Bottom of the table test for Pennock at Caersws
Port Talbot Town travel to the only side in the Principality Welsh Premier League yet to win a league match this season on Saturday when manager Tony Pennock takes his side to Caersws. The Bluebirds have struggled under the guidance of new manager Mike Barton this season and despite holding onto the services of striker Graham Evans, a number of players left the club in pre-season. Caersws did claim an impressive 9-0 victory over Mold Alexandra in the Welsh Cup last weekend but suffered a 5-3 defeat to Welshpool in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup on Wednesday night. The coach will be leaving the RE/MAX Stadium at 10.45am.

11th October 2007
Duggan leaves Goytre after six seasons
Former Port Talbot Town player and assistant manager Craig Duggan has parted company with Goytre United after six seasons in charge of the Welsh League side. Duggan was assistant to then Port Talbot Town manager David Rees when the club were promoted to the Welsh Premier League in 2000. At Goytre, Duggan won the Welsh Football League in 2006 but the club declined promotion which caused unrest between the club and the management. Goytre United are currently joint top of the league following an undefeated start to the campaign which makes the decision even more surprising although Duggan is already being linked with a return to his former club Afan Lido who parted company with manager Phil Holmes a fortnight ago. Duggan was a key member of the Afan Lido side that qualified for the UEFA Cup in 1995.

Neath claim Challenge Cup win despite Rose double
Port Talbot Town suffered a surprise 3-2 defeat to Neath Athletic at Llandarcy Park on Tuesday night in the latest series of group matches in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup. Striker Martin Rose was twice on target for Port Talbot as manager Tony Pennock used the match to give regular substitutes a place in the starting line-up while also naming himself in goal in his first game back since a pre-season injury. Neath opened the scoring on 14 minutes before Rose equalised before half-time but a poor start to the second half saw Neath take a 3-1 lead and leave Port Talbot playing catch up despite the second goal from Rose on 79 minutes. The side are now back in league action on Saturday away to Caersws with the coach leaving the RE/MAX Stadium at 10.45am.

West End out to cause annual Welsh Cup upset
Despite playing two levels below Port Talbot Town, West End will be confident ahead of Saturday’s Welsh Cup 2nd Round match with home advantage in their favour and a string of upsets and impressive performances in the competition behind them. In 2005 West End entered the competition for the first time as a Division Three Welsh League side and defeated the recently relegated Afan Lido 3-0 with a superb display away from home even though the sides had been four levels apart just months earlier. The following season West End caused another Welsh Cup upset when they defeated Goytre United away from home before losing 2-0 at Carmarthen Town in the following round despite another impressive performance. Since their promotion to the Welsh League in 2005, the former Swansea League side have not had a high-profile home game until this weekend and a big crowd is expected for the club that produced players such as Chris Coleman and Dean Saunders. Matthew Thompson remains the only injury for Port Talbot with Dylan Blain expected to keep his place in the squad. A supporters coach will be leaving the RE/MAX Stadium at 1.15pm for just £5 return trip but spaces are limited.

Port Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock will take charge of Wales in the new Under-23 Semi-Pro Tournament with an opening match against Italy in Milan on November 14th. Together with Italy, Wales have been drawn to play England and Finland in Group A with Belgium, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Slovakia making up Group B. The inaugural tournament will be stretched over two years with Wales playing England away from home on 20th February 2008 and will play at home to Finland in November 2008. The winners of Group A will then play the winners of Group B in February 2009 in the final. “I'm extremely exited about our participation in this tournament as it will give young players the opportunity to show what talent we have at our disposal in Wales”, said Pennock. “Hopefully some of the players will get the recognition they deserve and progress into full-time football in the future. By having matches against strong opposition our players can only improve and therefore the game itself in Wales improves.” Pennock will again be assisted for the tournament by Terry Boyle.

Seventh heaven from a premier performance
Kerry Morgan grabbed his second hat-trick since joining Port Talbot Town on-loan from Swansea City as Port Talbot stormed into the second round of the FAW Premier Cup with an emphatic 7-2 victory at Porthmadog on Tuesday night. Liam McCreesh opened the scoring after just seven minutes with his fourth goal of the season before a double from Martin Rose in the opening half appeared to make the game safe. Kerry Morgan got in on the act during the second half as he scored twice before setting up Chad Bond to give Port Talbot a commanding 6-0 lead. Porthmadog pulled two goals back as Port Talbot became complacent on their advantage but Morgan grabbed his third and his sides seventh on 89 minutes with a fine strike. Port Talbot now join Bangor City, Haverfordwest, Carmarthen, Rhyl, Llanelli, Welshpool and Newport County in the draw for the second round of the lucrative competition. The side are now in action on Saturday away to West End in the 2nd round of the Welsh Cup.  A supporters coach leaves the RE/MAX Stadium at 1.15pm and is priced at only £5 per person for a return trip.

Blain back in favour for Premier Cup match
Experienced midfielder Dylan Blain has been recalled to the squad ahead of Tuesday night’s FAW Premier Cup match at Porthmadog. Blain has been left out of the side by manager Tony Pennock in recent weeks despite scoring twice in six starting appearances and will be keen to keep his place in the side with this latest opportunity. Matthew Thompson picked up a hamstring injury in the 2-1 victory over Aberystwyth Town on Friday night and Blain will join Scott Barrow and Daniel Lancey in competition for his place in the starting line-up on Tuesday. Kick off is at 7.00pm with the coach leaving the RE/MAX Stadium at 12.00pm.
