Town and Morgan suffer agony at Carmarthen
Manager Tony Pennock resigned from his position after this defeat in the FAW Premier Cup. Pennock made a surprise in his team selection before the match by dropping both Leigh De-Vulgt and Lee John to the bench and his brave decision appeared to have worked in his favour as Port Talbot took a half-time lead. Carmarthen started the better of the two sides and applied all of the early pressure although Port Talbot were dangerous on the counter-attack with the pace of Kerry Morgan and Liam McCreesh causing the home defence problems as they created space for Martin Rose and it was Rose who handed his side the lead on 33 minutes with a fine finish. David Burrows made his return to the side but suffered an injury early in the match and was replaced at the re-start for the second period by De-Vulgt on the right. Striker Kerry Morgan had been in for some physical attention from the home side like Burrows, and with little protection from referee Steve Hames, it came as no surprise to see him taken to hospital on 62 minutes with a suspected broken collar bone after a challenge that Hames deemed not even worthy of a free-kick. Chad Bond replaced Morgan but chances for the visitors were few and far between as Carmarthen kept possession well and dominated for long periods. As frustrations increased for both sides Carmarthen grabbed a deserved equaliser in the 90th minute when substitute Jamal Easter scored from close range to take the game to extra-time. Port Talbot looked a shadow of themselves during the second half despite the introduction of Lee John and carried their poor performance through to the additional 30 minutes as Carmarthen looked the far better of the two sides and were denied claiming a more comfortable victory through some excellent work by goalkeeper Kristian Rogers. On 102 minutes however the home side took the lead when former Port Talbot midfielder Nathan Cotterrall was on hand to drive the ball home and take his side into the quarter final stage of the competition.

Cotterrall inspires the Old Gold

Carmarthen gained some compensation for Saturday's Welsh Cup exit at Newport YMCA by claiming a guaranteed £15,000 and a place in the last eight. It signalled the end of Port Talbot manager Tony Pennock's reign as the former Football League keeper quit after the final whistle. But the Steelmen were within seconds of marching into the quarter-finals courtesy of a Martin Rose goal on 33 minutes. The striker had come already come close to opening the visitors' account before converting a Dylain Blain flick-on from 16 yards. Talbot were forced onto the back foot for much of the game, with Sacha Walters bringing a good save from Kristian Rogers and then firing wide from a Nathan Cotterrall cross. But the Old Gold deservedly levelled in the final minute when Cotterrall provided for Jamal Easter, before playing a superb one-two with Danny Thomas in extra-time to claim the winner himself.

Pennock steps down at Port Talbot

Port Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock has stepped down as the Manager of the Steelmen. The popular goalkeeper, who is also the Manager of the Wales Semi Professional side, made up his mind before this evening's Premier Cup Extra-Time defeat to his former club Carmarthen Town and would have made the same decison had his side progressed. Pennock said in the recent Principality Welsh Premier Podcast Interview that he "had not been enjoying the pressures of management" and that he was "finding it difficult" and he had told friends that he had been considering his position for some time - It was not as a result of the club's exit from the Welsh Cup, League Cup or Premier Cup, and not the 8-0 defeat to Llanelli either. Pennock, who recently quit his post as the Swansea City goalkeeper coach to focus on his job with Talbot, took the job in the summer following the departure of Wayne Davies. The 'A' Licence Coach will now concentrate all of his immediate efforts on next week's first ever Wales Under 23 Semi Professional International match in Varese, Milan. Carmarthen Town who were dumped out of the Welsh Cup on Saturday by Newport YMCA, made amends in this competition by overcoming Port Talbot Town after extra time at Richmond Park. It looked as though the Steelmen were going to win after Martin Rose opened the scoring on 33 minutes with a confident strike following a clever Dylan Blain flick. The lead lasted until injury time in the second-half when sub striker Jamal Easter became the Old Gold hero by equalising at the death after Nathan Cotterrall's cross. The game went to the extra thirty minutes and the Town skipper Cotterrall struck after 12 minutes of the 1st period after Danny Thomas' clever assist, which proved to be the Town winner.

Match Report

Jamal Easter's goal in the second minute of injury time saw Town cancel out Port Talbot’s first half strike to take the tie into extra time. Martin Rose had put the Steelmen ahead on 33 minutes when he squeezed between two defenders to fire home Dylan Blain’s deft flick-on. Earlier Gregg Coombes and Sasha Walters had seen efforts turned over by Port Talbot keeper Kristian Rogers but the Steelmen retained their slim lead to the end of normal time despite considerable second half pressure with Danny Thomas and Walters both putting efforts wide of the target when well placed. Then in the second minute of injury time Cotterrall’s diagonal run to the right outflanked the defence and with Town’s captain pulling the ball back through the crowded area Easter side footed home to give Town just reward for their second half endeavour. With the game into extra time Danny Thomas played in Easter but the young forward’s effort was blocked by Rogers with the rebound fired wide. And it was Thomas who was the provider for the all important winner when having received the ball from Cotterall played it back into his captain’s path for the wing man to fire home from an angle. At the death Danny Thomas came close when his deft lob hit the upright and Chad Bond almost took the tie to penalties with the last kick of the game when his low strike was well saved by Thomas.
