Llanelli cruise through Friday night warm-up
Rhys Griffiths scored two goal within the opening eight minutes of this match to kick start a very comfortable victory for Llanelli in this Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup match. Both sides made a number of changes to their starting line-up’s with the two sides meeting each other at Llanelli in the Welsh Premier League a few days later. Manager Tony Pennock named himself in goal while Matthew Rees and Martin Rose joined the suspended Lee Surman and Liam McCreesh in sitting out the match. Llanelli started the far better of the two sides and Griffiths opened the scoring within six minutes before adding a second two minutes later. Llanelli then went three goals ahead when Paul Wanless scored on ten minutes to leave Port Talbot stunned. The home side started to organise despite having already lost the match and Chad Bond reduced the advantage on 24 minutes with a well taken strike. Llanelli continued to dominate the possession in the opening half but it was Port Talbot who would grabe the next goal as Chad Bond rounded the advancing keeper and scored his second in style to make it 3-2. With a comeback on the cards and a new found belief Port Talbot pushed forward but bad decisions at the back allowed Wanless to score his second for Llanelli from close range. The game was made safe on 74 minutes when former Afan Lido midfielder Craig Jones found himself in space and scored his sides fifth goal. Youth team player Rory Healey made his 1st team debut when he replaced Matthew Thompson in the middle of midfield and the tough tackling midfielder made himself known to the visitors as he broke up their passing play. With a complete change across the Port Talbot defence the side struggled to compete against the attacking play of Llanelli and will be looking for a more organised performance in the return league match.
