Scott Barrow was named on the substitutes bench on his return from suspension for
this match against Technogroup Welshpool as Port Talbot Town looked to carry on from
their 7-0 win over Elements Cefn Druids a few days before. Port Talbot started the
better of the two sides and that was how it stayed for the remainder of the match
as Martin Rose and Lee John both came close to opening the scoring early in the match.
The eventual goal arrived on 19 minutes when referee Huw Jones adjudged that Martin
Rose had been brought down in the area and pointed to the penalty spot after waving
away an earlier appeal. Rose stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to put
his side ahead. Five minutes later Port Talbot doubled their advantage as a defensive
mistake presented Neil Thomas with an open goal and he slotted the ball into the
empty net. Port Talbot kept pushing forward and forced a series of corners while
at the other end Lee Kendall remained untroubled. The third goal arrived from a corner
as captain Matthew Rees found himself unmarked at the back post and stretched to
turn the ball into the net from close range before the referee brought the half to
a close. Matthew Thompson replaced Gareth Phillips at half-time before Scott Barrow
made an appearance on 51 minutes. Port Talbot remained dominant in possession but
squandered opportunities in a quiet second half. The introduction of Drew Fahiya
offered Mark Jones side another attacking option and his pace caused problems for
the Welshpool defence although a bad tackle on him from John Boardman earned only
a yellow card on 67 minutes. Controversy arrived with just minutes remaining as a
tackle by McCreesh on the edge of the area was judged to be a foul by the referee
and McCreesh received a harsh yellow card. His frustration then saw him sent off
for dissent as the game re-started to leave manager Mark Jones disappointed despite
picking up three points and another clean sheet.

Steelmen on target for Europe
The Steelmen followed up the 7-0 drubbing of Cefn Druids midweek with another competent
performance to produced three more points in their bid for a Euro spot. Mark Jones’
side started where they left off four days earlier when they rushed to a 3-0 lead
by half time. But in the final 45 minutes Port Talbot took their foot off the gas
and Welshpool battened down the hatches. Top scorer Martin Rose made the first mark
in the 20th minute when he was nudged off the ball in the box and picked himself
up to convert from the spot. Five minutes later, Neil Thomas doubled the Steelmen’s
lead when a mix-up in the visitors’ defence saw the ball break free for Thomas to
fire into an empty net. The third arrived on the stroke of half time, when a Liam
McCreesh header rebounded to skipper Matthew Rees to score from close range. Having
created a winning position, Port Talbot dropped a few gears and protected their lead
while the Lilywhites toiled purposefully but to no effect. The only blip for the
home side was the late sending off of star man McCreesh.
