Seventh heaven from a premier performance
Port Talbot Town stormed into the second round of the FAW Premier Cup in emphatic style with a seven goal demolition of Porthmadog. Manager Tony Pennock handed a starting place to recalled Dylan Blain in midfield in place of the injured Matthew Thompson in an otherwise unchanged line-up from the sides previous two victories. Port Talbot opened the scoring after just 7 minutes when Liam McCreesh and Kerry Morgan found themselves on the end of a Martin Rose cross at the back post and McCreesh steered the ball into the net for the opening goal. The goal gave the side the confidence to take the game to the home side and Rose and Morgan again showed their ability to work as a team upfront as they created chance after chance before Rose doubled the lead on 19 minutes from close range. Lee John and McCreesh continued to cause problems from wide positions as the lack of pace in the home side was more than exposed although Kristian Rogers was called into action midway through the opening half to make a fine save. Port Talbot extended their lead just before half time when Rose directed another cross past the home goalkeeper. Top scorer Kerry Morgan got in on the act in the second half and turned from provider to scorer with a typical well taken strike on 64 minutes to put his side four goals ahead and added a second on 73 minutes to make it 5-0 as his pace and finishing ability proved far too much for the Porthmadog defence. Minutes after scoring his sides fifth Morgan was again in space to shoot but played the ball across the area for substitute Chad Bond to score from close range. The sixth goal brought a lapse in concentration from Port Talbot as they allowed Porthmadog to score twice in quick succession through strikers Carl Owen and Paul Roberts as complacency began to set in. The goals provided the spark Port Talbot needed to complete the scoring however and Kerry Morgan was again on hand on 89 minutes to score his third of the game and his sides seventh to round off a superb performance on the night.

Port out in a nine goal show at home

Porthmadog’s exit from the lucrative Premier Cup, which had swelled their coffers last season when they made the quarter-finals, was painful, as their suspect defence were severely punished. Port Talbot’s midfield maestro Kerry Morgan ran the show, producing guile and speed, and his rewards were three goals scored and two others created. Porthmadog managed a brief bright patch towards the end, when they clawed back a couple of goals in as many minutes, through Carl Owen and Paul Roberts, but that hardly dented the visitors’ command. Owen turned his marker on the edge of the box to drive a strong shot into the net and Roberts prodded a close range effort over the line, after accepting Marcus Orlik’s pass. But The Traeth team’s cup hopes had begun to fade in the tie’s opening quarter, when Liam McCreesh and Martin Rose scored for Port Talbot after seven and 19 minutes. Rose added the third goal on 39 minutes and the rout got even worse in the second period, when Morgan netted after 64 and 73, Chad Bond after 76 and Morgan with his hat-trick clincher on 89.

Morgan fires seven-up Steelmen

Port Talbot eclipsed their hosts with a stunning display to continue their fine form in the competition, in which they reached the semi-finals last season. Leading three-nil at the break, there was no let-up in the second half as on-loan Swansea starlet Kerry Morgan helped himself to a second hat-trick of the campaign. The Steelmen took just seven minutes to open their account when Liam McCreesh scored at the second attempt after keeper Joe Sagar had parried his first effort. Talbot went close several times before extending their lead on 19 minutes through Martin Rose, who seized on an error by skipper Rhys Roberts and the striker added another before the break, heading-in from Morgan's cross. Port posed little threat, although Carl Owen forced a fingertip save from Kris Rogers on the resumption, but any hopes of a revival were ended by Morgan who raced onto a long ball and held off Roberts before firing a 15-yarder past Sagar. Morgan added a superb second goal on 73 minutes before providing for sub Chad Bond to notch the sixth and, although Owen and Paul Roberts added some respectability to the scoreline, Talbot and Morgan had the last word.

Steelmen crush Port for Premier Cup progression

Port Talbot Town cruised into the second round of the FAW Premier Cup at Y Traeth last night following a 7-2 demolition of Clayton Blackmore's struggling Porthmadog. The Steelmen, beaten semi-finalists last year, were 3-0 up at the break through Liam McCreesh and two Martin Rose headers but the second half belonged to young Swansea City starlet Kerry Morgan. The diminutive striker totally mesmerised the home defence with a dazzling exhibition of footwork and finishing, banging home a 15-minute hat-trick. Chad Bond was also on target for Tony Pennock's side, while Carl Owen and Paul Roberts hit two late Porth consolation goals.

Match Report

This was a disastrous evening for Porthmadog as they were comprehensively defeated by a Port Talbot side who were full of pace and running. Time after time Port Talbot struck on the break and exposed a square defensive line-up forcing errors and then clinically capitalising on them. Three up at half time the visitors continued to expose the home defence with swift counter-attacks in the second and man of the match Kerry Morgan helped himself to a second half hat trick. As early as the third minute the pacey Lee John threatened on the right but shot straight at Sagar. In the sixth minute, however, Port Talbot went ahead when McCreesh, though he had his initial shot blocked, saw his second effort slide under Sagar into the net. Though Porthmadog enjoyed a fair share of possession and built their attacks patiently the moment the ball was lost Port Talbot countered at pace and additions to the score always seemed likely. Lee John fired over, Rose shot wide and a last ditch tackle by John G Jones halted another attack. Porthmadog maintained a high defensive line and Rose capitalised on this after 22' pouncing on a Rhys Roberts error to race on from just inside the home half to score with a low drive. The nearest Porthmadog came to scoring in the opening half came when Kyle Jacobs broke forward and his powerful strike went just over the angle. Teenager, Kerry Morgan, then came more into the game chasing the ball to the bye line on the right and lifting a cross to the near post for Rose to head Port Talbot's third. A minute later and the visitors could have added a fourth but Blain was wide at the far post. Porthmadog had a good period of possession at the beginning of the second period but their only real threat on goal came when Warren Beattie fed Carl Owen on the edge of the box for the striker to turn well but Rogers touched the shot over the bar. Any thought of a revival however was short lived as Kerry Morgan, on 64 min, collected a long ball out of defence and held off Rhys Roberts before sending a 15 yard shot across Sagar into the far corner of the net. Rogers dealt with a Paul Roberts effort but Kerry Morgan was now leading the home defence a merry dance. With 74 mins gone Morgan chased a long ball down the right and lifted a superb effort into the top left hand corner of the net. Two minutes later and Morgan outpaced the Porthmadog defence, down the left this time, and feeding Chad Bond who coolly added Port Talbot's sixth. Porthmadog then scored twice before but this only brought a modicum of respectability to a dire situation. First Carl Owen took advantage of defensive hesitancy to fire a good low shot past Rogers from 18 yards. Four mins later Paul Roberts added a second converting a right wing cross from Marcus Orlik. The last word however came from Port Talbot and the inevitable Morgan. The teenager on loan from Swansea City showed a final touch of class lifting Chad Bond's pass over Sagar for Port Talbot's seventh and Kerry Morgan's own hat trick. By the end Porthmadog looked totally disorganised and the progress shown against TNS and Welshpool appeared to be a false dawn. Beating Port Talbot last season with 10 men was but a distant memory.
