Port Talbot Town 1st Team manager Mark Jones was in attendance as Mark Pike’s side
picked up their first league points of the season with a fully-deserved victory against
Haverfordwest County. Despite the visitors having the better of the early possession,
Port Talbot soon settled into the match and after Luke Robinson had come close with
two half-chances for Haverfordwest, Sam Baker had the best chance to open the scoring
but his effort went over the bar on 18 minutes after Jordan Edwards and Sam France
had combined well on the right. Jamie Jones then came close to handing Port Talbot
the lead but his placed shot went narrowly wide of the post after 21 minutes as the
home side began to take control of the match. Chances were few and far between for
the remainder of the half but Port Talbot began to dominate in the second half with
Chris Silva coming close from a free-kick outside the area on 55 minutes. Sam Baker
then tested visiting goalkeeper Luke Clarke-Trevis with a long range effort but the
keeper was able to push the ball wide of the post with a fine save minutes later.
Port Talbot kept the momentum up with Jack Germain a constant problem for Haverfordwest
with his attacking runs from midfield while at the back the central defensive pairing
of Aaron Biddescombe and Josh Wonnacott prevented goalkeeper Luke Martin from being
called into action. Port Talbot took their deserved lead on 68 minutes in style as
Sam France drilled a half-volley from the edge of the area past the Haverfordwest
keeper but allowed the visitors back into the match just three minutes later when
he tripped substitute Atueyi Vincent in the area. Ashley Andrews scored the resulting
penalty despite Martin diving the right way but Port Talbot were back in front on
73 minutes when Jack Germain capitalised on a defensive mistake to pass the ball
into an empty net from a tight angle. Haverfordwest pushed for an equaliser but Port
Talbot defended strongly with Aaron Biddescombe in superb form to hold onto their
lead and claimed the deserved victory.
