A potentially difficult Welsh Cup match was well won by Mark Pike’s side despite
the visitors coming back into the game in the second half. Following last weeks win
over Barry Town, Port Talbot started the match confidently but were under pressure
in the early exchanges as Cambrian forced a series of corners and created a few half
chances for themselves. The opening goal arrived on the counter-attack however as
Port Talbot pushed forward and Liam Pullen scored the first goal of the game with
a well taken strike after 11 minutes. Cambrian continued to have the better of the
open play but Port Talbot grew in confidence following the goal and started playing
some excellent football. Sam France had a couple of chances to increase the lead
but he was denied by Tommy Barrett in the visitors goal but Pullen was on hand after
25 minutes to score his second of the game with another well taken goal. Frustrations
grew for the visitors and a knee injury to one of their players that required hospital
treatment midway through the half added to their problems. Just before half time
however Cambrian did pull a goal back through Nicholas Price who scored with a fine
drive from outside the area. Cambrian came out confidently for the second half as
they looked for an equaliser and it arrived on 58 minutes through Nathan Hughes.
Port Talbot were soon back in front however as straight from the re-start a long
ball upfield was poorly dealt with by the goalkeeper and Chris Silva’s determined
work enabled him to restore the sides lead on 59 minutes. The match became open with
both sides looking to add to their goal tally and on 71 minutes a header towards
goal from Liam Pullen was turned into his own net by Cambrian defender Nicholas Price.
Port Talbot Town goalkeeper Ryan Dummer was called into action as the visitors looked
for a way back into the match but Port Talbot defended well to maintain their advantage
and claim their second successive win.
