Port Talbot Town claimed a comfortable victory and another clean sheet in this Principality Welsh Premier League match as Liam McCreesh returned from suspension to score twice. Manager Mark Jones made enforced changes to his side due to Drew Fahiya and Daniel Thomas both missing the match through suspension and Karl Lewis being unavailable through injury as Lloyd Grist made his first Welsh Premier League start for the club since signing in the summer. Lee Kendall also returned in goal for the side following his recent injury. Port Talbot Town started the better of the two sides and that was how it stayed for the entire match as Welshpool offered little against a committed Port Talbot side. Lee John caused the home side problems in the early exchanges with a number of testing runs on the right of midfield while Liam McCreesh became a problem for the Welshpool defence with his attacking runs. Martin Rose had chances to open the scoring midway through the half but could not direct his header on target but on 33 minutes McCreesh was in the right place at the right time to slot home a rebounded save from close range. It was no more than Port Talbot deserved after a dominant start to the match with Lee Kendall a spectator at the other end of the field. Early in the second half Port Talbot had increased their lead in similar fashion as McCreesh again found himself able to score from close range on 55 minutes. Mark Jones side now had a comfortable lead and substitutes Mark Jones, Nicky Holland and Andy Boslem were all introduced during the remainder of the game. Rose again came close but his effort drifted wide of the post while Holland caused problems for the home side with his runs from midfield. Kendall was called into action during injury time to make a fine save from Welshpool substitute Calvin Davies in one of the home sides few forward moves but with the result hardly ever in doubt Port Talbot held on for a clean sheet and deserved win.

A lot more to come from Steelmen says Jones

Two goals from returning Liam McCreesh gave Port Talbot a much-needed 2-0 success at Welshpool, their fourth win at the venue. Those three points advance the Steelmen from ninth to seventh, but manager Mark Jones believes there is more to come from his team. "We missed six or seven sitters today," he said. "It could have been a really big win and some day soon we are going to dish out a hiding to some team. But it was a good win and totally comprehensive, and I thought Liam was smashing for us." Jones added: "Liam scored both our goals when we beat TNS 2-0, so to do it again is fantastic for a midfielder. We are back on track, and there's a lot to be pleased about as we were without Drew Fahiya and Danny Thomas who were both out through suspension." McCreesh broke the deadlock on the half-hour mark when he pounced on a rebound to beat home keeper Jack Cudworth. And, 10 minutes after the break, McCreesh was on target again as he made the game safe.

Jones is delighted to have McCreesh back

Liam McCreesh returned from suspension to net twice as Port Talbot won for the fourth year in a row at Maes y Dre. His efforts sent the Steelmen up to seventh spot and earned praise from his manager Mark Jones. “Liam also scored twice in our 2-0 win over TNS and that’s a fantastic effort for a midfielder,” he said. “I was really pleased today as we won well. It was very comprehensive as we missed six or seven glorious chances to have secured a really big win. Some team are going to get a real hammering from us if we carry on like this. We’re back on track and Liam is back with a bang.” It took McCreesh just half an hour to celebrate his return as he pounced on a rebound to slam an unstoppable shot past Jack Cudworth. And he made the game safe 10 minutes into the second half leaving Welshpool pointless from their two home matches to date.

Port cast shadow over sunny Welshpool

Liam McCreesh bagged a goal in each half as Port Talbot returned to winning ways at lowly Welshpool. The Steelmen, stung by the previous week’s last-gasp loss to Aberystwyth, were always in charge at sunny Maesydre and should have had the points secured before half time. As it was they had to be content with McCreesh’s opener on the half hour mark when he fired home a rebound past keeper Jack Cudworth, followed by his second 10 minutes into the second half. Port Talbot were never likely to relinquish the reins against the struggling Lilywhites who have now lost both home outings this term. Visiting keeper Lee Kendall had little to test him for much of the encounter, although he was called into action late on to make a smart save from substitute Calvin Davies. But it was all too late in the day for Pool who, having not applied for next season’s new 12-team league, are facing a long winter ahead. As for the Steelmen, they are looking good for a top-six finish.
