A number of new players made their Port Talbot Town debuts as manager Mark Pike took
charge of his first competitive game since taking over the side during the summer.
It was a nervous start for the side however against a physical Bryntirion team and
after just six minutes the visitors had taken the lead through Davey Lavers who made
no mistake with a good finish past goalkeeper Ryan Dummer. It was far from an ideal
start for Port Talbot Town as Dummer became the far busier of the two goalkeepers
in the opening exchanges as Port Talbot struggled to retain possession. On 13 minutes
Bryntirion had doubled their lead when as John-Paul Budd drilled the ball through
a crowded penalty area to extend their advantage. Despite being two goals behind
Port Talbot settled into the game after 20 minutes and began asking questions themselves
with striker Liam Pullen a concern for the visitors defence and he twice came close
to bringing his team back into the match including an effort that hit the post from
close range. The game swung in favour of the home side just before the break as the
referee, having failed to take control of a number of hard challenges earlier in
the match, sent off Bryntirion’s Davey Lavers for a stamp on Chris Thornton following
consultation with his linesman. Having finished the opening half the better of the
two sides, Port Talbot came right into the match in the second half and pulled back
a deserved equaliser through Chris Silva on 61 minutes as he scored a with fine individual
effort. The goal made the game very open but the play was constantly interrupted
by a string of injuries although most of the fouls were missed by the referee. Port
Talbot had two good chances with Liam Pullen twice finding himself in space in the
area but could not score an equaliser as Bryntirion held on for the victory although
Port Talbot will take plenty of positives from an encouraging performance.
