On a wet midweek Corus claimed a comfortable victory to maintain their excellent
start to their inaugural season in the Welsh League. With a strong starting line-up
Corus took the game to Pentwyn from the start with Dahi Al-Wadi having an early attempt
saved by the visiting goalkeeper while attacking full-back Glyn McQueen was a constant
problem for the Pentwyn defence with a number of early forward runs and crosses and
Corus could have taken the lead well before their eventual opening goal that arrived
on 32 minutes. A surprise short corner caught the Pentwyn defence off guard and Al-Wadi
was in the right place to deflect the eventual cross past the keeper to hand his
side the advantage. Pentwyn began to push forward but struggled against the experienced
and well-organised home defence. In the second half Corus continued to dominate the
game but were unable to add to their lead and allowed Pentwyn to have more time on
the ball and they began to ask a few questions of their own and Corus goalkeeper
Matthew Stanton made an important save to deny the visitors an equalising goal midway
through the second half. Al-Wadi thought he had added a second minutes later but
his effort was ruled out for offside by the referee but the eventual second goal
arrived on 71 minutes as a low cross from Carl Clement was placed past the goalkeeper
by Gavin Kinsey to double the home sides advantage. Pentwyn quickly became unorganised
following the goal and on 80 minutes Carl Clement added a third with a fine individual
effort as he found himself in space and lifted the ball over the advancing keeper
to complete the scoring. Substitute Scott Gorvett also cam close with a close range
effort that was saved before the referee brought the game to a close with Corus claiming
a well-deserved win.
