Manager Mark Jones named the same starting line-up and substitutes as in the victory over Elements Cefn Druids the weekend before for this big derby match against Llanelli despite impressive performances from a number of his new signings in midweek. A crowd of close to 500 were almost treated to an opening goal for the home side as Drew Fahiya had two clear chances in the opening few minutes of the match but could not hand his side the lead. Port Talbot came close again in the opening exchanges as Lee John found himself in space at the back post but his effort hit the crossbar. Llanelli were able to cause problems at the other end but goalkeeper Lee Kendall was more than aware to any chances that they had while Ashley Morris in the Llanelli goal was equal to any opportunities created by the home side. Frustrations began to show midway through the opening half with Liam McCreesh, Leigh D-Vulgt and Llanelli’s Chris Holloway all booked following an altercation. Llanelli’s best chance of the game arrived just before half-time when former Port Talbot Town striker Rhys Griffiths found himself in space on the left and slotted the ball past the advancing Kendall only for Lee Surman to slide in and clear the ball off the line. The second half was poor in contrast to the first with both sides struggling to create chances as both teams became more and more frustrated. On 76 minutes Scott Barrow and Antonio Corbisiero were both booked for a spat on the touchline while commanding Llanelli defender Wyn Thomas was also booked for remonstrating with the referee. Both sides went for the win in the last ten minutes with Rhys Griffiths forcing Kendall to make a fine save to tip the ball onto the post while at the other end Lee John again hit the crossbar with a long-range effort. Neither side score the all-important goal however as the referee brought the game to a close.

Match Report

The Reds secured their second drawn game in succession in a 0 0 stalemate at The Genquip Stadium, Port Talbot on Friday night. The Reds rode their luck in the opening minutes when the home side had three good chances to open the scoring, with one effort brilliantly saved by Ashley Morris in the Reds goal and the others squandered! The Reds came more into the game after these early scares with Rhys Griffiths seeing his goal bound effort cleared off the line minutes before half time! The second period followed much the same path as the first, with the home side creating the better chances with the Reds conceding too many needless free kicks. Rhys Griffiths again went close in the 80th minute when his header was tipped past the post by Lee Kendall in the Port Talbot goal.  In the dying minutes, Ashley Morris came to the rescue once again when he produced two outstanding saves as the Reds held on for a hard earned point.  A big plus point of the night was the impressive debut of 17 year old Ryan Batley at left back and Ashley Morris’s keeping but it was Wyn Thomas who won the man of the match vote with an outstanding performance at centre back!
