Trialists on target in comfortable win
Port Talbot Town claimed a comfortable 2-0 victory against their MacWhirter Welsh League opponents Caldicot Town with trialists Daniel Lancey and Steve Evans scoring in each half. An unfamiliar starting line-up included a number of trialists as manager Tony Pennock named the majority of his strongest team on the bench. Port Talbot were in control of the match from the start and things were made more difficult for Caldicot when a challenge from Martin Rose forced the home side to change their goalkeeper. Leigh De-Vulgt tested their defence with a series of corners and free-kicks but it was Daniel Lancey who opened the scoring when his cross from the left to the far post was pushed into the goal by the keeper. A number of substitutions slowed the game down in the second half and invited pressure from the home side who forced a fine save from Tony Pennock in the Port Talbot goal. Trialist Steve Evans doubled the advantage for Port Talbot towards the end of the match with a fine strike from outside the area although the visitors struggled to create many more chances during the second half. Frustration from the home side saw Gareth Phillips involved in an incident towards the end of the match as Port Talbot held on to claim a comfortable victory. Former Cwmbran Town defender Rhys Williams and winger Daniel Lancey impressed for Port Talbot out of all the trialists on show while a battling and hard working performance from Martin Rose in the opening half further enhanced his growing reputation.
