Bore draw as Port Talbot run out of ideas
A disappointing performance resulted in this league match ending goalless as Port Talbot struggled to turn their possession into goals. Daniel Lancey was named in the starting line-up on his return from injury but failed to make an impact on the match in the opening half while Chad Bond and Martin Rose combined well upfront together but failed to test the visiting goalkeeper as both he and Kristian Rogers in the Port Talbot goal became spectators in the match. Despite the lack of goalmouth action the game started at a quick pace with both sides looking to play football and it was Port Talbot who created the best chance of the opening half when Martin Rose made a strong run through the middle of the field before threading the ball to Bond but he could only direct the ball over the bar under pressure from the Airbus defence. It would prove to be Port Talbot’s best chance of the disappointing match. The second half started at a slower place as both sides resorted to playing a longer ball forward in a frustrating second period. Port Talbot pushed forward looking to make the breakthrough as Airbus relied on catching the home side on the break and the frustration of the home side against their physical opponents became obvious. Daniel Lancey came close with two shots from outside the area in quick succession but neither tested the Airbus keeper. Main threat Martin Rose was then replaced by Kerry Morgan on 75 minutes but despite the difference in size between the two strikers Port Talbot continued to play high balls forward for the front two and it was no coincidence that Port Talbot failed to have an effort on goal after the substitution. Airbus remained a threat on the counter-attack and could have snatched a last minute goal to win the match but Port Talbot held on as their chances dried up at the other end. Dean Johnston was brought on with two minutes remaining to match the physical style of the opposition but it was too little too late to make any impact on a very frustrating match.

Steelmen held to draw

Port Talbot struggled to break down Airbus, and despite having a series of half chances to seal the win, they were unable to make the all-important impact against their North Wales visitors. With the Steelmen having no joy, with recent away defeats in the league and cup against Haverfordwest County and Llanelli, manager Tony Pennock was anxious to rectify his side's disappointing run of form. The Victoria Road side had little to offer during the early exchanges, with Paul Hallows linking with Jamie McIntosh and it required a clearance from Lee Surman to prevent Airbus from gaining a second minute breakthrough. The Wingmakers continued to force Port Talbot on to the back foot and after McIntosh found Darren Wright in spacebut he sent a rising shot flashing narrowly over the top. The Steelmen gradually pushed forward and after nine minutes an error by Gareth Owen saw Chad Bond attempt to gain advantage, and the Neath-born striker forced goalkeeper Andrew Hughes to get down quickly at his far post to smother the ball. Port Talbot were again examining the visitors's defensive qualities and after Dylan Blain had been obstructed by John Davies, the resulting free-kick was curled into the penalty area by Daniel Lancey only for Steve Hopkins to make a crucial clearance. The attacking momentum was maintained by Port Talbot, and from a Leigh De-Vulgt throw near the corner flag, Bond hammered a low shot across the face of the goal, but there was no supporting player available to apply the appropriate finish. Six minutes before the break, Port Talbot should have moved in front when Bond found Dylan Blain with an accurate pass, but the weakly driven hot failed to trouble Andrew Hughes. The second half saw Port Talbot increase the tempo and within a minute of the restart, Lancey was just off target with a low shot flashing inches wide of the upright. Just after the hour mark, Gareth Phillips joined the attacking line-up and found sub Scott Barrow available in space, but keeper Hughes was not tested with a 25-yard effort being sent over the top. The Airbus defence continued to be resolute, and whatever Port Talbot threw at them, their rearguard capably dealt with. In the sometimes frustrating encounter, Kerry Morgan was introduced in place of the ineffective Martin Rose, and the Merthyr-born striker saw a goal-bound shot intercepted by Owen with 12 minutes left. During the final minute a throw from De-Vulgt slipped through the fingers of the Airbus keeper, only for defender Steve Hopkins to make a goalmouth clearance to salvage a point for the visitors.

Match Report

Airbus again underlined their resolve after extending their unbeaten league start in this goalless stalemate at the Remax Stadium. Both sides could have nicked the points on a dry, bumpy pitch but the Wingmakers would have been satisfied with a share of the spoils after this committed showing. In a frantic opening, the visitors saw Darren Wright fire a deflected strike narrowly wide in the sixth minute while Paul Hallows volleyed over from 30 yards five minutes later after player-boss Gareth Owen had headed down. At the other end, Port Talbot were also off target with their efforts, notably Chad Bond who volleyed over from 16 yards in the first half before crashing another good opportunity over the bar from the first attack of the second period. Bond lashed another volley wide moments later as the steelworks men battled to find a way past their spirited opponents, whose performance was epitomised by a solid show from keeper Andy Hughes. At the other end, Dave Hughes spurned an opening when curling the ball wide after being put through by Wright, while Wright himself clipped the bar with a terrific volley on 68 minutes. Airbus have now picked up eight points from four outings, their best ever start in the Welsh Premier.

Talbot and Airbus draw blanks
Airbus have made their best-ever start to a Welsh Premier season since arriving in the top flight three years ago and maintained their unbeaten record at The Remax Stadium. Both sides had chances to win the game and Darren Wright almost gave the visitors an early lead when his goal-bound shot was deflected narrowly wide. Paul Hallows also volleyed over from 30 yards five minutes later from player/manager Gareth Owen's headed flick-on. Port Talbot were also wide of the mark, Chad Bond twice volleying over Andy Hughes's bar either side of the break. Former Swansea starlet Bond wasted another good opportunity as the Steelmen battled in vain to break down the well-organised Wingmakers with keeper Hughes in fine form. Dave Hughes curled a shot wide for Airbus, while Wright clipped the bar with a superb volley on 68 minutes.
