Step forward as experience over-shadows result
A long journey south to Bournemouth and heavy traffic did not allow us much time to prepare and shake off the stiff legs that showed early on. Bournemouth started the better side and capitalised on our stiff legs to go one up within 5 minutes. Some shape changes took place and the boys soon got into their rhythm and kept a physically strong Bournemouth side at bay. We started to created some very good chances as the boys started to believe in themselves, Oliver Bowen going close from 18 yards, as did Liam Jenkins and a clear penalty shout turned down ended the first period 1-0 down. A few changes to the side and the opportunity to rest some tired legs saw our young guns dictate the second 20 minutes, continuing to create very good chances with Ryan Mckeegan and Ryan Morgan going close on a few occasions and yet another penalty shout turned down. The third 20 minutes saw a couple of injuries to Ryan Mckeegan and Sam Hodge, both had to come off to receive some treatment, a reshuffle of players and their positions saw the strong Bournemouth side start to dictate and it was not long before they capitalised and went 2 up towards the end of the third period. Going into the final 20 minutes the boys new they had to dig deep but the long journey, injuries and the baking heat took its toll on some and it was not long before we were three down. AFC Bournemouth were physically the stronger and started to create a number of chances but with some sound defending kept them at bay. Yet another penalty shout turned down but towards the end the referee gave a penalty when Jordan Edwards was clearly tripped in the box, unfortunately it was not our day for Ryan Mckeegan to put the ball wide of the post to end the game AFC Bournemouth 3 - 0 Port Talbot Town Academy 14's. A bit of luck, a bit more fight and it could have been a different story! But I am sure the boys have learnt quite a bit from this experience that must be a massive positive step forward.
