Jones happy to concentrate on matters on the field
Manager Mark Jones will not be entering into Welsh football politics unlike his opposite number at Neath. The debate over the reduction of clubs in the Principality Welsh Premier League to 12 from 2010-2011 has prompted Neath manager Andy Dyer to question the benefits and the motives behind the decision but Jones is far more focused on what must be achieved on the field. “That’s progress I suppose but I just let the powers-that-be make those decisions,” said Jones when questioned over the changes. Jones did however outline his immediate plans for the new season during the brief interview with the Port Talbot Guardian. “Forget about getting into Europe next season, we now have to make finishing in the top 10 our number one priority”.

Reid starts work towards UEFA A Licence
Coach Paul Reid this week starts working towards the UEFA A Licence coaching award. Having taken charge of the side in Saturdays friendly against Llanelli, Reid will now spend the remaining summer months completing the hours of theory and practical work involved in achieving the award. The A Licence has become a requirement for all Principality Welsh Premier League managers through the introduction of domestic and UEFA Licensing and with manager Mark Jones already an A Licence holder and soon to be working towards the UEFA Pro Licence, Port Talbot Town could soon boast the highest qualified coaching staff in the league. A vastly experienced player in the Football League having played 543 games and scored 58 goals in a long career in the professional game, Reid played the majority of his league football at Filbert Street with Leicester City and still represents them in the Masters tournament. Played in the Welsh Premier League for both Carmarthen Town and Afan Lido and became coach at Port Talbot Town following the appointment of Tony Pennock as manager after a brief coaching role with the junior teams at Swansea City. Took over as caretaker manager following Tony Pennock’s resignation and claimed two victories in his only two Welsh Premier League games in charge before remaining as coach during Nicky Tucker’s first season. Played an important role in the club achieving a record fourth place finish in 2007-2008 but was replaced in the summer by Matthew Bishop. Returned to the club in December 2008 as coach following the appointment of Mark Jones after Nicky Tucker was sacked after a poor start to the season.

Brazil - “Neil’s move took me by surprise”
Haverfordwest County manager Derek Brazil has admitted his surprise and disappointment at losing midfielder Neil Thomas to Port Talbot Town. Voted Supporters Player of the Year at the New Bridge Meadow last season, Thomas was joined in exiting the club by former Port Talbot defender Craig Hanford who has decided to sign for Carmarthen Town. “Both players have been excellent for us”, said Brazil the official Haverfordwest County website. “Unfortunately, Carmarthen came in with a deal for Craig that we were unable to match, and he has decided to go. Neil believes that his career would be furthered with Port Talbot, and has also decided to leave. I'm disappointed to lose both of them as I was led to believe that they would be staying. I would like to thank Carmarthen manager Deryn Brace for having the courtesy to phone me before he made the approach for Craig, but Neil's move took me by surprise, “ he added. “Obviously we would have preferred to keep Hanford and Thomas, but these days if a player wishes to leave a club there is nothing the club can do. I think that it is better for player to leave if he is unsettled. I wish them both good luck, and it is up to myself and coach Mark Evans to find replacements who want to play for the club”. Hanford came through the youth ranks at Port Talbot Town before signing for Welsh League side Skewen Athletic and then returned to the club to make close to 100 Welsh Premier League appearances before signing for Haverfordwest County, where he gained an Wales Under-23 Semi-Pro cap in 2008-2009.

Manager Mark Jones has boosted his team with the signing of highly-influential and experienced midfielder Neil Thomas from Haverfordwest County. The former Bangor City, Llanelli and Porthmadog player agreed a deal to join Port Talbot Town on Monday much to the delight of Jones. “I am extremely pleased to have secured the services of one of the most consistent players in the Welsh Premier League”, said Jones. “Neil has been a tremendous player at every club he has represented in this league and he is a very important addition to our squad”.  With 23 goals from 107 league starts, Thomas brings an impressive goal return from midfield and will bring some vital experience to Jones’ young squad of players. Thomas made an immediate impression on the Welsh Premier League in 2004 when his impressive displays for Llanelli earned him the league Player of the Month award for December after just ten games for the club. Mark Jones admiration for Thomas, who also plays for the RAF and British Combined Services teams, was clear when he was named in Jones’ Welsh Premier League Team of the Season squad and he could now make his first appearance against one of his former clubs when Port Talbot Town travel to Llanelli on Saturday, 20th June for a friendly at the Parc-y-Scarlets training complex. Professional era not an option for now
Chairman Andrew Edwards has stated that Port Talbot Town are not in any position to follow Neath in becoming a full-time professional club but has not ruled out a move in the future with the right financial backing. In an interview with the Port Talbot Guardian, Edwards commended Neath on their decision and explained why the option was not available at present at The GenQuip Stadium. “It is about affordability and funds available and we do not have them,” said Edwards. “If a backer came along and wanted to help finance the club then the answer would be yes to becoming a full-time football club, otherwise it will be a few years down the road before we stop being a semi-pro club. You have to wish Neath good luck for going full-time but I don’t think they will be any better than us. Training more often will help, but they have a lot of new players from the English pyramid system, who do not know this league. I believe we can still compete with them and beat them”.

Former Afan Lido and Llanelli striker Mark Jones has signed for Port Talbot Town manager and namesake Mark Jones. The local youngster came through the ranks at Afan Lido before joining the Cardiff City Academy but returned to Lido on his release. Jones was eventually loaned back to Afan Lido to improve his match fitness the following season and was eventually released by Llanelli at the end of the 2008-2009 campaign. Port Talbot Town were quick to move in for the youngster and made him their second forward signing of the season following the acquisition of Daniel Thomas from Goytre United. “He's a great signing for us, he's still very young but he's played a lot of games and scored some goals already”, said manager Mark Jones “He's a local lad and will really be a good acquisition for us as he's a big, strong forward with pace and will add an extra dimension to our squad, so I'm delighted to get him. It wasn't just because of his name!”.
