Tucker praises “best performance by far this season”
Manager Nicky Tucker has spoken exclusively to the official website after Saturday’s 3-2 home win over NEWI Cefn Druids. “This was a big game for us even though it was only our third game of the season as defeat would have left us eight points behind the leaders,” said Tucker. “If we want to finish high up the table and push for Europe these are the games we have to win, and credit to the players for putting in their best performance by far this season. The score could and should have been far more, but to their credit the Druids kept battling, but it was always a comfortable win. I was pleased with all our individual performances but in particular Martin Rose, Lee John, and man of the match James Burgin who were all outstanding, along with Drew Fahiya making his Welsh Premier debut. We still have a lot work to do before we are really on top of our game, but things are certainly moving in the right direction”. Tucker is expected to make a number of changes for Tuesday’s Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup match against Llanelli at The GenQuip Stadium. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

Burgin shines as Rose double brings opening victory
Port Talbot Town claimed their first victory of the season on Saturday as they eased past NEWI Cefn Druids 3-2 at The GenQuip Stadium. Striker Martin Rose grabbed a brace of second half goals to build on an opening half strike from James Burgin after the visitors had taken a 31st minute lead. Manager Nicky Tucker handed summer signing Drew Fahiya his Welsh Premier League debut as he partnered Rose in attack while Lee John returned to the starting line-up to replace the injured Matthew Thompson and he was instrumental in creating the equalising Port Talbot Town goal with a superb run. Port Talbot appeared to be cruising to a comfortable win with a 3-1 advantage but a late goal from Chris McGinn brought the Druids back into the match but the side held on to claim maximum points. James Burgin was voted man of the match on the day although there were a number of candidates for the award. The side are now back in action at The GenQuip Stadium on Tuesday night when they take on Llanelli in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

Thompson ruled out through hamstring injury
Midfielder Matthew Thompson will miss Saturday’s home match against NEWI Cefn Druids due to a hamstring injury sustained during Tuesday nights training session. Thompson was assessed by physio Michael Warlock as the side trained at The GenQuip Stadium ahead of this weekend’s opening home match on Thursday and his absence will result in manager Nicky Tucker making an enforced change to his midfield. Lee John, Scott Evans and Scott Barrow were all named on the bench against Aberystwyth last weekend leaving Tucker with a number of possible options as his side look to take maximum points from the opening home match of the season. Last season Port Talbot Town defeated NEWI Cefn Druids 5-1 at home and a repeat scoreline on Saturday is priced at 100/1 by our betting partners Betway. Admission for the match remains at one of the lowest in the Welsh Premier League at only £5 for adults, £3 for concessions and just £1 for kids. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

Druids confident after impressive display against The New Saints
NEWI Cefn Druids will take a number of positives from last weekends defeat to TNS when they visit The GenQuip Stadium on Saturday. Speaking to the official Cefn Druids website, joint manager Lee Jones looked ahead to the match. “It will be another tough game and we'll train during the week and pick a team we think can do a job down there,” said Jones. “As soon as The New Saints scored it was going to be a test of our lads and their character. We kept it to 1-0 and, after they scored they didn't really create much. If we show that kind of effort and commitment then we will win more games than we lose this year. You can't fault any of our players for their performance, effort and endeavour”. The match will be the first match at the ground since mid-April due to extensive work on the playing surface. Last season Port Talbot won the corresponding fixture 5-1 and a repeat result would be more than welcome. Admission for the match remains at one of the lowest in the Welsh Premier League at only £5 for adults, £3 for concessions and just £1 for kids. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

Neath fielded Welsh Premier League regulars Lee Bevan, Jack Jenkins and Daniel Lancey in their side while Port Talbot added youth team striker Sam Baker to their starting line-up. Matthew Jones and David Brennan led the way for Port Talbot with a hat-trick each with an own goal completing the scoring but the game was held up for 40 minutes as striker Scott Williams suffered a bad break in the opening half and was taken to hospital. The club would like to wish Scott a quick return to action. The Reserve side are now back in action on Wednesday, 3rd September when they make the short journey to Briton Ferry.

Blues return to the green green grass of home
Football returns to The GenQuip Stadium this Saturday after four and half months. Extensive work and heavy investment on the playing surface has left the newly named stadium unusable during pre-season but Nicky Tucker’s side host NEWI Cefn Druids this weekend in their opening match of the new Principality Welsh Premier League season. Tucker’s side will have a training session at the ground on Thursday night in preparation for Saturday’s match as they look for their first victory of the season following a defeat at The New Saints on the opening day and a 1-1 draw at Aberystwyth last weekend. Midfielder Liam McCreesh was stretchered off with an ankle injury on Saturday but is expected to be fit for this weekend while Matthew Thompson suffered a slight tweak of his hamstring during training on Tuesday and will be assessed closer to the match. A full range of odds are available for this weekend’s Principality Welsh Premier League games through our betting partners Betway. Port Talbot Town are currently favourites at 4/5 for the win.

Swain scores on Academy debut as Blues impress
Jamie Swain scored in his first game for our Under-14 Academy side this week as they defeated AFC Porth away from home 2-1. Ollie Bowen joined Swain on the scoresheet as Port Talbot took a 2-0 lead into the break and maintained their lead up until Porth reduced the deficit in the last few minutes. With only twelve players from their twenty man squad available, Port Talbot impressed against the Rhondda league and cup champions with some excellent football to further boost their confidence ahead of the new Academy season.

Coyne and Tucker happy with share of the points
Aberystwyth Town manager Brian Coyne has echoed Port Talbot manager Nicky Tucker’s statements following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with both managers happy to take a share of the points. “Port Talbot are a good side, so we’re happy with a point and the start we’ve made to the season,” said Coyne. “We kept going right to the end and it would have been a travesty had we not got something out of the game, I thought we played well again. It was a good game and perhaps we could have won it at the end,” he added. “I would have settled for a point before the game,” said Tucker, “but the way the match developed, with us under pressure towards the end, a lot was owed to goalkeeper Kristian Rogers, who was outstanding. After 86 minutes, when we were a goal in front and having had enough chances to kill the game off, it was disappointing to allow Aberystwyth back with a late penalty. Kristian Rogers made some great saves, but with four minutes to go things went wrong. Mark McGibbon appeared to give Aneurin Thomas a nudge. Some referees may or may not have awarded the spot-kick.”

23rd August 2008
Positive point earned as Tucker makes sweeping changes
Manager Nicky Tucker showed his intentions in the build-up to this potentially difficult match at Aberystwyth Town by dropping Leigh De-Vulgt from the squad and switching Lee John and Scott Barrow to the bench. Aberystwyth started the better of the two sides but their advantage was marginal and it was Port Talbot who created the slightly better chances in a largely negative opening half from both sides. Port Talbot took the lead through Liam McCreesh on 43 minutes when he capitalised on some excellent work from Martin Rose to slide in at the back post to claim his side the lead at half-time. Lee John made an appearance in the second half in place of Stefan Morrison and was influential as Port Talbot searched to double their advantage but the side suffered when McCreesh was the target for some heavy treatment from Aberystwyth substitute Steve Bowen and had to be stretchered off. Aberystwyth were handed a equaliser on 86 minutes when referee Simon Jones adjudged McGibbon to have fouled in the area and Luke Sherbon made no mistake from his spot-kick.

23rd August 2008
Principality Welsh Premier League round-up
The New Saints maintained their winning start to the season thanks to a Michael Wilde goal as they defeated NEWI Cefn Druids on Friday night but they were moved off the top of the table on Saturday as GAP Connah’s Quay and champions Llanelli both claimed convincing wins. GAP Connah’s Quay heaped more misery onto bottom of the table Neath Athletic with a 5-0 win while Llanelli eased past Caersws 3-0 at Stebonheath Park thorough two goals from Mark Pritchard. Luke Sherbon equalised for Aberystwyth Town on 86 minutes as they shared the points with Port Talbot Town at Park Avenue while a goal from George Horan was enough for Rhyl to claim maximum points from their match at Caernarfon Town. Newtown suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Airbus UK Broughton while Bangor City claimed the biggest win of the day as they defeated Porthmadog 6-0 with Chris Sharp scoring a hat-trick. Newcomers Prestatyn Town held Welshpool to a 2-2 draw while Haverfordwest County were held at home by Carmarthen in the other Friday night match.

Tucker takes action with new defensive signing
Port Talbot Town Football Club are delighted to confirm that defender David Biggs has completed his move to the club from Southern League side Yate Town to strengthen the clubs defensive options ahead of Saturday’s match at Aberystwyth. Eighteen year-old Biggs started his career by progressing through the youth ranks at Cardiff City before joining Cheltenham Town on a two-year contract in 2006. Biggs became a regular figure in the defence of the reserve team at the Football League club before being loaned to Yate Town to gain further experience. On his release from Cheltenham Biggs signed for Yate but has now completed his transfer to Port Talbot Town and is included in the squad for Saturday. “David is a very talented young defender and I am delighted to have him on board”, said manager Nicky Tucker. “He is versatile and will offer us a number of options at the back which will further improve competition for places in the squad”. Kick off at Aberystwyth Town is at 2.30pm with the coach leaving The GenQuip Stadium at 10.15am.

21st August 2008
Early league leaders out for opening day repeat
Aberystwyth Town stormed to the top of the Principality Welsh Premier League last weekend with a 6-2 win over Neath Athletic at Park Avenue and this Saturday they welcome Port Talbot Town high in confidence after their impressive opening result. New signing Graham Evans and Luke Sherbon scored a brace each as Brian Coyne’s side eased past Neath with Glyndwr Hughes and an own goal from defender Sean Cronin completing the victory. Port Talbot suffered an opening day reverse at The New Saints but manager Nicky Tucker has already made changes to his squad for this weekend’s match as he welcomes defender Mark McGibbon back into the squad. “We have a good record at Park Avenue”, said Tucker. “After the disappointing display last weekend we will be looking for a positive reaction from the players and we will be positive in our approach”. Port Talbot won last seasons corresponding fixture 4-2 and a repeat scoreline is currently at 80/1 with our betting partners Betway. Kick off is at 2.30pm with the coach leaving The GenQuip Stadium at 10.30am.

Paul Evans announces retirement after Lido return
Popular local football figure Paul Evans has announced his retirement from the game. Evans came through the youth ranks at Afan Lido and appeared for the club in the UEFA Cup as well as in the Welsh League and Welsh Premier League. Evans went on to enjoy a brief and successful spell as joint manager of the side and reached the Welsh Cup Final in 2007 before stepping down. Evans made the move to Port Talbot Town in January this year as cover for captain Matthew Rees and made a big impact both on and off the field but decided to return to Afan Lido in the summer in order to guarantee regular football. After just two league games back however Evans has decided to retire from playing. Port Talbot Town would like to thank Paul for his contribution last season as well as congratulating him on his successful career. Paul made a total of 260 appearances in the Welsh Premier League in which he started 235 and scored 13 goals although he made only three starts and three substitute appearances for Port Talbot Town during his brief spell at the club.

McGibbon returns to offer timely boost
Mark McGibbon will make a welcome return to Port Talbot Town this weekend after being added to manager Nicky Tucker’s squad ahead of Saturday’s Principality Welsh Premier League match at Aberystwyth Town. “Mark was expected to miss the opening month of the season due to work reasons but is now back with us and I am delighted to include him in this weekend’s squad”, said Tucker. “His return will be an important boost ahead of a match in which we will be looking to take at the very least a point from, but will also mean again that some players will be disappointed at not being involved”.  One player definitely missing from the squad will be summer signing Shelton Payne who has suffered a broken tibia and will be out of action for a number of weeks. Kick off at Aberystwyth is at 2.30pm with the coach leaving The GenQuip Stadium at 10.15am.

Inaugural Community Soccer School success
Over thirty young players from the area enjoyed three days of quality football coaching last week as Port Talbot Town Football Club launched the first of a number of planned community schemes with a Summer Soccer School supported by Celtic Leisure and South Wales Police. During the three day event Port Talbot Town players Lee John and Gareth Phillips passed on their knowledge to the youngsters and there was a surprise for those attending the event as Swansea City midfielder Kristian O’Leary presented certificates to the players taking part. Chairman Andrew Edwards was delighted by the success of the event, “As a club, we are looking to develop our links with the local community and working with South Wales Police and Celtic Leisure will really enhance our stature. This first event has been a huge success and we will be announcing further initiatives in the very near future”. A number of further community initiatives are planned for the coming season as the club looks to further improve it’s links with both local schools and with the local community.

Neath open up Challenge Cup group with five goal win
Challenge Cup holders Llanelli sit below Neath Athletic and Port Talbot Town in the group stage of the competition after an experimental Neath Athletic side claimed a 5-3 win over an experienced Llanelli team at Stebonheath on Tuesday night. Former Port Talbot Town striker Kerry Morgan, currently on-loan at Neath from Swansea City, grabbed a brace in the convincing win to leave Llanelli in desperate need of a victory when they visit The GenQuip Stadium on Tuesday, 2nd of September. In the other groups the goal theme continued as Rhyl ran out 6-1 winners over Airbus UK Broughton while Newtown defeated Caernarfon Town 7-1. Carmarthen Town defeat rivals Haverfordwest County away from home 2-1 while Caersws claimed a 3-2 win over Porthmadog and John Toner scored twice for The New Saints as they eased past GAP Connah’s Quay 2-0 at The Deeside Stadium. Llanelli Chairman Nitin Parekh as praised our recent signings as a boost to the Welsh Premier League. “Things are coming together now and that has been aided by some of the signings being made throughout the league,” said Parekh. “Rhyl, in particular, have made some quality signings and that signals their ambition. Port Talbot as well, who have a great chairman in Andrew Edwards, have really strengthened their squad.”

Tucker slams artificial surface after New Saints defeat
Manager Nicky Tucker was highly critical of The New Saints artificial playing surface after watching his side slip to a two goal defeat on Saturday. “The New Saints deserved their victory as they were better than us”, said Tucker. “However, they should not be allowed to play on such a surface as it places clubs like ourselves at a huge disadvantage. The facility at Park Hall has absolutely no atmosphere and seemed like nothing more than playing a training match at a local leisure centre. We did not start well and and while we did improve in the second half we are still not right in a couple of areas and we have a lot of work to do before next weekend but I am glad that this match is now out of the way”. Tucker had praise for two players in particular though, “Stefan Morrison looked sharp when he came on but Liam McCreesh was by far the best player for us on the day with an outstanding work rate and he carried a few players. We must now look ahead to Aberystwyth next weekend when we can play on a proper grass surface at proper football ground”.

Disappointing defeat for Blues in difficult season opener
A difficult opening match of the new Principality Welsh Premier League season proved too much for Port Talbot Town as Nicky Tucker’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat at The New Saints on Saturday. Kristian James and Jason Welsh were both dropped from the squad despite being two of the more high-profile summer signings as Tucker elected to play a more familiar looking eleven with the three Swansea City loan players settling for a place on the bench. Jamie Wood handed the home side the lead inside the opening four minutes when he headed home unmarked from a cross before Alfie Carter doubled the advantage on 38 minutes. The introduction of the three Swansea City loan players offered Port Talbot Town a boost in the second half and Martin Rose came close to reducing the deficit but his shot was well saved by home goalkeeper Paul Harrison. The match proved a comfortable victory for The New Saints however as Kristian Rogers was called into action to keep the advantage at two goals before the final whistle as the home side claimed a convincing opening day victory.

16th August 2008
Principality Welsh Premier League round-up
The new Principality Welsh Premier League season opened in style on Friday night with seventeen goals scored in the opening three games. Aberystwyth Town claimed the most convincing victory of the weekend as they defeated Neath Athletic 6-2 with Graham Evans and Luke Sherbon both on target with a brace each. Welshpool Town needed an injury time equaliser from Ross Stephens to draw 3-3 with NEWI Cefn Druids while newly promoted Prestatyn Town claimed a debut victory through a double strike from Ian Griffiths. Champions Llanelli claimed a 2-0 win at Bangor City to avenge their Welsh Cup Final defeat with former Port Talbot Town defender Lee Phillips opening the scoring before Craig Williams doubled the advantage. The New Saints and Rhyl made their intentions clear with victories over Port Talbot Town and Newtown respectively while a goal from Tim Hicks was enough to hand Carmarthen Town maximum points at home to Porthmadog. Caernarfon Town suffered a 1-0 defeat at Caersws through a Jamie Haynes goal while GAP Connah’s Quay claimed a 2-1 win over Haverfordwest County in the remaining game of the weekend.

Tough decisions for Tucker ahead of opening weekend
Manager Nicky Tucker has a near full-strength squad available for Saturday’s opening Principality Welsh Premier League match at The New Saints with nineteen available players meaning three will not be included in the squad. Unavailable for the match are goalkeeper Gareth Williams, midfielder Shelton Payne and youth team midfielder Rory Healey through injury while defender Mark McGibbon is not expected to be available for the opening month of the season through work reasons. Highlights of the match will be shown on S4C Saturday night at 7.15pm through a new dedicated programme called ‘Sgorio Cymru’. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

15th August 2008
Former Blues make it a difficult debut for Payne
Contracted Port Talbot Town goalkeeper Josh Payne made his Bryntirion debut on Friday night at Afan Lido following his loan move but could not prevent his side slipping to a 2-0 defeat. Former Port Talbot Town player Scott McCourbrey and former trialist Darren Griffiths scored the two goals for our local rivals.

Tucker talks team selections, TNS and the top three
With the new Principality Welsh Premier League starting this Saturday, manager Nicky Tucker has spoken exclusively to the official website. “Pre-season has not panned out as we had hoped”, said Tucker. “We have not been playing consistently well and we are short of where we want to be but it is the first game of the season that really counts and things have started to come together over the last two games. TNS is a very tough place to go however and the playing surface will make it difficult but we will be positive in our approach and while we would be delighted with a point we will be looking for all three”. Tucker also defended his decision to experiment during pre-season. “The side is not finalised so it was important to offer everyone enough match time. Unlike last season the team does not pick itself anymore as we have a far stronger squad available and I wanted to offer everyone the chance to impress. As for the season ahead, Europe remains our goal and while the top three will be extremely difficult to break into we have strengthened the squad over the summer and are capable of building on last seasons fourth place finish”. Kick off at The New Saints is at 2.30pm.

14th August 2008
Blues look for first win at new look New Saints
On Saturday Port Talbot Town take on The New Saints at Park Hall with Nicky Tucker’s side looking for their first ever victory at the home of their opponents. Tucker will have a full strength side to choose from with only youth team midfielder Rory Healey ruled out through an ankle ligament injury sustained against Afan Lido last week. Port Talbot defeated The New Saints at home last season thanks to a solitary goal from Lee John but suffered a 2-1 reverse at The New Saints earlier in the season under the management of Tony Pennock. There have been a number of changes at The New Saints since last season’s encounters with manager Ken McKenna stepping down from his position with Head Coach Andy Cale and his assistant Mike Davies now in charge. The New Saints have already competed in Europe this season having been narrowly knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Lithuanian side Suduva after claiming second place in the Principality Welsh Premier League table last season. The coach will leave The GenQuip Stadium at 8.45am on Saturday. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

Pre-season closes with victory in ‘not so friendly’ friendly
Port Talbot Town claimed a 3-2 win over Welsh League champions and local rivals Goytre United on Tuesday with goals from Liam McCreesh, Matthew Thompson and Martin Rose. The game did not match it’s friendly title howver with Goytre United reduced to ten men just before half time when former Swansea City striker Jonathan Keaveney was sent off for a bad tackle on Lee John followed by dissent to the match officials. McCreesh handed Port Talbot Town a deserved lead after just six minutes and Thompson doubled the advantage before the home side reduced the deficit. Port Talbot remained in control however and Martin Rose restored the two goal advantage just after the half hour mark. Former Port Talbot Town trialist Robbie Walters was then on target for Goytre when he placed his shot past debut Youth team goalkeeper Lloyd Clement but Port Talbot continued their dominance in the second half with substitutes Drew Fahiya and James Burgin having goals disallowed while the physical play of the home side resulted in a number of confrontations between the two sets of players.

9th August 2008
Plenty of positives to take despite defeat
Manager Nicky Tucker will take plenty more positive than negative points away from his sides disappointing defeat at Merthyr Tydfil on Saturday as his team prepare for the new Principality Welsh Premier League season at The New Saints next weekend. Despite conceding after just 40 seconds and then allowing the home side to double their advantage just before half time, Port Talbot dominated for long periods and forced an early siege on the Merthyr Tydfil goal during the opening exchanges of the second half. Port Talbot are now back in action at Goytre United on Tuesday. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

Davies suspension reversed due to an admin error
Contrary to our previous report, Darren Davies is NOT suspended for the opening two games of the season. The confusion was due to a mix-up between his former club Merthyr Tydfil and the FAW

8th August 2008
Happy Birthday Darren, your suspended
On the eve of his 30th birthday, new signing Darren Davies has received an unwelcome gift from the Football Association of Wales with notification that he will serve a two match suspension at the start of the season. Davies accumalated the disciplinary points during his time at Merthyr Tydfil last season and as a result will sit out the two Principality Welsh Premier League games at The New Saints and Aberystwyth Town. Davies, who has been one of the most consistent performers in the side during pre-season, signed for the club in the summer and was also appointed as the new Academy Director. This Saturday Davies will be included in the Port Talbot Town squad to take on his former club Merthyr Tydfil at Penydarren Park before next Tuesday’s re-arranged friendly at Goytre United completes the pre-season programme. Fellow new signing Kristian James is expected to be the favourite to fill in at left back during Davies suspension.

7th August 2008
Morrison really does offer ‘Quality and Value’
Swansea City striker Stefan Morrison made his Port Talbot Town debut on Thursday night and quickly showed that he can become an important loan signing for the club by scoring both goals in the 2-2 draw with local rivals Afan Lido. Morrison opened the scoring after just 14 minutes after an excellent run from fellow Swansea City loan signing James Burgin after a strong start from Nicky Tucker’s side but former Port Talbot Town trialist Darren Griffiths made an immediate impression on his Afan Lido debut however as he scored twice in the opening half to leave Port Talbot trailing at half time. A number of substitutions by the visitors failed to inspire a return to the quality shown at the start of the match and it was not until the 82nd minute that Morrison grabbed the equaliser after Drew Fahiya created enough space for the striker to score with a well taken goal. It was another generally disappointing performance from the side however although there were positives to take from the game ahead of Saturday’s friendly at Merthyr Tydfil. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

7th August 2008
Trialist Griffiths out to prove Tucker wrong
Darren Griffiths scored for Port Talbot Town against Bridgend Town in a 3-0 victory a fortnight ago but the trialist was released by manager Nicky Tucker after the game having failed to make enough of impact to earn the former Merthyr Tydfil player terms for the new season. On Thursday night Griffiths will be out to prove Tucker wrong after signing for Afan Lido and will make his debut for our local rivals in tonight’s friendly match. Former Port Talbot Town defender Carl Evans has not been included in the Afan Lido squad for the game although Paul Evans will be in the Afan Lido squad to take on his former club. This Saturday Port Talbot make the journey to Penydarren Park to take on Merthyr Tydfil with manager Nicky Tucker expected to name his strongest team ahead of the start of the new Principality Welsh Premier League season the following week. Port Talbot Town have also arranged an extra friendly with a match at Goytre United on Tuesday, 12th August. The match was originally scheduled for last Tuesday but was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

5th August 2008
Derby Day returns at very short notice
Port Talbot Town will take on local rivals Afan Lido on Thursday night after the two sides hastily arranged a friendly following the postponement of their respective games on Tuesday night. Afan Lido were due to host Neath Athletic while Port Talbot were fixtured to play at Welsh League champions Goytre United but both games were cancelled due to the continuing heavy rain. With the new season approaching, both sides agreed to bring back the popular fixture and the two sides will now meet at Afan Lido on Thursday night. Defender Carl Evans and midfielder Paul Evans both left Port Talbot Town during the summer to return to Afan Lido while the familiar management duo of Craig Duggan and David Rees will be overseeing their new look Lido side from the touchline. For Port Talbot Town manager Nicky Tucker the game will offer the competitive edge his side have been looking for during pre-season after Saturday’s disappointing draw at Mangotsfield United. Kick off is at 7.15pm.

5th August 2008
Friendly washout leaves 90 minutes to prepare for new season
Torrential rain has resulted in Tuesday’s friendly at Goytre United being postponed and with it leaves manager Nicky Tucker with just another 90 minutes of match practice before the Principality Welsh Premier League season starts with a visit to The New Saints on Saturday, 16th August unless another friendly can be arranged. With a 3-0 win over Welsh League side Bridgend the sides only success during pre-season, Port Talbot now take on Southern League side Merthyr Tydfil at Penydarren Park on Saturday in their final pre-season friendly. Unavailability of certain players has added to some inconsistent performances but the postponement of Tuesday’s friendly will be a major concern for Tucker following a less than impressive display by his side in Saturday’s 2-2 at Mangotsfield United. Merthyr Tydfil have had a mixed pre-season to date and last weekend were humbled 4-2 by Principality Welsh Premier League side Carmarthen Town. Tucker is expected to name his strongest side for the match and include Swansea City loan signings James Burgin, Stefan Morrison and Scott Evans in the squad. Kick off is at 2.30pm.

4th August 2008
Champions test next as Port Talbot take on local rivals
Port Talbot Town make the short journey to Welsh League champions and local rivals Goytre United on Tuesday night with manager Nicky Tucker expecting a better performance from his side than the one he witnessed in a 2-2 draw at Mangotsfield United at the weekend. Despite an 86th minute equaliser from Kristian James, Port Talbot struggled to create chances in front of goal and looked uneasy at the back leaving Tucker concerned with just two friendlies remaining before his side start the new Principality Welsh Premier League season at The New Saints on Saturday, 16th August. Kick off at Goytre is at 7.30pm.

4th August 2008
Academy claim four goal win over local league winners
Our Under-14 Academy side impressed in their opening friendly on Saturday as they defeated Cymmer 4-1 away from home. Goals from Chris Silva, Liam Jenkins and a double strike Oliver Bowen were more than enough to claim a comfortable victory over the local league champions.

2nd August 2008
James equaliser papers over the cracks in poor performance
An 86th minute equaliser from Kristian James handed Port Talbot Town a 2-2 draw at Mangotsfield United on Saturday but it was the less than impressive performance that will leave manager Nicky Tucker concerned with just two friendlies remaining until the start of the new season. Matthew Rees made his return to the side but could not prevent Mangotsfield taking the lead after just ten minutes when Kristian Rogers spilled his save but Matthew Thompson equalised minutes later. After 18 minutes Port Talbot were 2-1 down and that was how it stayed until substitute Kristian James salvaged a point with a well taken strike. An experimental Port Talbot Town sided started the match but the introduction of a stronger looking side in the second half struggled to compete against Southern League side. Port Talbot are now in action at local rivals Goytre United on Tuesday night with Nicky Tucker expecting a much improved performance from his side.

Phillips - “Port Talbot messed up and blame me for it”
Lee Phillips has hit back at Port Talbot Town by blaming the club for messing up his transfer from Llanelli. “I didn't want to leave Llanelli but the new contract I was offered was less than the one I signed, I was being offered almost 50 per cent less. I just couldn't sign it, so both parties went their separate ways”, said Phillips in the Llanelli Star. “I went to Port Talbot after they contacted me and I took part in training and played one game. I was going to sign a contract but I was told they would put it on the table as soon as Tucks returned from a coaching course. They registered me as a non-contract player. Then Llanelli contacted me and offered me better terms than what they originally offered. Once again, I never wanted to leave Llanelli. I've worked with Nico for most of my career and I'm really friendly with the players. Everything fell into place and when you are offered that, it makes sense to go ahead with it. I may get a frosty welcome when we go there, but I've played at some massive venues in Europe and I can deal with those kind of situations. I think they messed up by offering me non-contract terms and they are trying to blame me for it”.

Swansea City agree loan deal for Morrison, Burgin and Evans
Port Talbot Town have been boosted by the arrival of three Swansea City loan players ahead of Saturday’s friendly against Mangotsfield United. Striker Stefan Morrison signed for the Swans on a free transfer from West Bromwich Albion earlier this month and has already featured in the club’s tours of Sweden and Spain as well as scoring the second goal in Thursday’s win over Chester City. Defender James Burgin arrives for his second spell at Port Talbot after joining on-loan from the Swans in January and impressed during Tuesday’s win over Bridgend Town. Completing the trio is former Manchester City and Wales Under-17 midfielder Scott Evans who is currently unavailable due to a short term injury. Morrison and Burgin are now expected to be included in Saturday’s squad for the match at Mangotsfield as manager Nicky Tucker also welcomes back Liam McCreesh and Matthew Thompson. Striker Martin Rose is still unavailable however and Lee John will not play after picking up a slight knock in Tuesday’s match against Bridgend Town.
