AUGUST 2007 31st August 2007 Defensive mistakes and wasted chances Port Talbot Town suffered their second away defeat of the season on Friday night as Haverfordwest County capitalised on sloppy defending to claim a 2-1 victory. Port Talbot had all the possession but failed to convert their chances into goals before the home side scored twice in three minutes during the second half to leave Port Talbot chasing the game. Liam McCreesh scored his first goal for the club in the last few minutes of the match but it was not enough to prevent the side losing a game they should have won comfortably. Port Talbot are now back in cup action at Llanelli on Tuesday, 4th September, in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup group stage. 31st August 2007 Academy take on Llanelli this Sunday Our three Academy sides travel to Llanelli on Sunday to play their next round of friendlies and will look to build on their performances at AFC Bournemouth last weekend. 30th August 2007 Welsh Schools comeback against Irish The Welsh Schools Football Association Under-16 side came back from being two goals down to draw 2-2 against their Republic of Ireland counterparts at the RE/MAX Stadium on Thursday night. 30th August 2007 Academy Update from the Under-14s Port Talbot Town Under-14 Academy side defeated Pontardawe Town 2-1 on Thursday night in a friendly match with goals from Ryan Morgan and a free kick from Sam Hodge. 29th August 2007 Former team-mates with Premier points to prove Liam McCreesh and Ian Jones experienced highs and lows together at Afan Lido in May this year with a League Cup Final win and a Welsh Cup Final defeat. This Friday the two will be on opposite sides however when Port Talbot Town travel to Haverfordwest County in the Principality Welsh Premier League. Haverfordwest manager Derek Brazil brought Jones back to the Welsh Premier after a seven year absence in the summer after the former Inter Cardiff striker scored 42 Welsh League goals last season. McCreesh made a single appearance for Haverfordwest on dual registration last season but despite their interest in signing him this year, McCreesh made the move to Port Talbot Town to build on his impressive statistic of already playing 92 games in the Welsh Premier League despite not yet turning 22 years of age. Daniel Lancey and Liam McCreesh were a big plus by constantly causing problems to the Newtown defence. It was good to see Kerry Morgan came off the substitutes' bench and score in his first game for us too, he chased a series of lost causes before anticipating a poor back pass and then made a lightning strike in the final attack of the match.” 27th August 2007 Welsh Premier weekend round-up Aberystwyth Town were the talk of the weekend following thier 5-1 victory over champions The New Saints at Park Avenue. Striker Jamie Reed, on loan from League Two side Wrexham, claimed a hat-trick in a superb performance. Rose scored either side of half-time after Lee Surman had opened the scoring on 39 minutes with further second half goals from Dylan Blain and new signing Kerry Morgan completing the rout. Craig Hanford is available after serving his one match suspension against Caernarfon Town last weekend while Daniel Lancey is doubtful as he struggles with a hamstring injury from the victory over Neath Athletic. 23rd August 2007 Port Talbot take on new-look Newtown Tony Pennock will be looking for a repeat performance of his sides 3-0 victory over Neath a fortnight ago rather than a repeat of an awful second half at Caernarfon Town last weekend when his Port Talbot side take on a much improved Newtown at the RE/MAX Stadium on Saturday. Craig Hanford returns to the squad after suspension with Pennock and Daniel Lancey the only injury problems for the side. An impressive opening half display saw Port Talbot take a deserved lead through Dyfan Pierce while Caernarfon were unable to create a chance on goal before their equaliser just before the break. Port Talobt struggled through the second half however and found themselves 2-1 down before a last minute penalty handed a great chance to salvage a point. Liam McCreesh’s spot kick was saved however and Caernarfon went onto score a third in injury time. 17th August 2007 Caernarfon confident after pre-season displays Port Talbot Town make the long journey to Caernarfon Town on Saturday with the home side confident after a series of impressive pre-season performances. “In the games we’ve played over the last few weeks, we’ve done well, it’s going to be difficult picking a starting XI for Saturday. We’ve looked good going forward so far and we have had some good results.”, said manager Steve O’Shaughnessy. “Port Talbot did well last season and the club is moving up. They’ve got a new manager Tony Pennock and he’s experienced, so they will be very organised. But we are looking to start well and get three points.” he added. 17th August 2007 Under-19‘s impress with attacking display Port Talbot Under-19s defeated Merthyr Tydfil 4-2 Wednesday in their second pre-season friendly. 17th August 2007 Port Talbot Town to host International treble The RE/MAX Stadium will host three International matches in August and September with sides from both the Football Association of Wales and the Welsh Schools Football Association. Gareth Phillips is expected to feature despite having stitches last weekend while Scott Barrow has recovered from an ankle injury and is available for selection although Pennock himself remains out with a thigh strain so Kristian Rogers will continue in goal. Caernarfon Town will have new signing Vinnie Whelan as goalkeeper following the young Irishman’s move from Wrexham where he played in their reserve team and has also been capped by Ireland at U18 level. Caernarfon have enjoyed a successful pre-season with another new signing, Bobby Jones, impressing upfront. The coach will leave the RE/MAX Stadium at 7.30am. Kick off is at 2.30pm. 16th August 2007 Afan FM look for ref accountability In their latest feature, 107.9 Afan FM Sports Editor Hash takes a look at a popular topic of discussion, the referee. Following on from criticism of Brian James performance in the match between Port Talbot Town and Neath, Hash discusses the possibility of the match official coming out after the game and discussing his performance instead of the current stonewall approach that leads to constant media speculation over the reasoning behind a number of decisions. Hash also looks at the idea behind a curtain raiser at the start of the Welsh Premier League season between a team of players from the North against a team made up of players from the South as well as the popular discussion of Summer football in this popular feature. Afan FM will be keeping upto date with all the action from the RE/MAX Stadium and will have live updates from Caernarfon Town this weekend. 14th August 2007 McKenna predicts Port Talbot to surprise Ken McKenna, manager of Principality Welsh Premier League champions The New Saints, has predicted that Port Talbot Town could challenge at the top of the table this season. Speaking with Rhyl manager John Hulse, Llanelli boss Peter Nicholas and Tony Pennock in the Wales on Sunday, McKenna had this to say on who would be title favourites, “I think it’s safe to say there will be the usual suspects involved again, ourselves, Rhyl and Llanelli. But there’s always someone else who comes out of the pack and I think Port Talbot might do something this year. They’ve got a good set-up down there, a good new manager and a nice little relationship with Swansea which could help”. Pennock however had a few other candidates in mind in his respons. “It’s a bit worrying people mentioning us! Wayne Davies obviously did a good job here for the last few years but we’ll just see how it goes for now – and you can’t look past the same old faces of Rhyl, Llanelli and TNS. Then there’s the next group like ourselves, Carmarthen and Welshpool but I think Bangor could do well. They’re a big club who have had a few disappointing seasons but they should be stronger now”. 13th August 2007 Former Blues enjoy opening weekend A number of former Port Talbot players started their competitive fixtures for their respective club’s this weekend and all enjoyed a degree of success. The highest profile match was at Torquay United in the Nationwide Conference as goalkeeper Simon Rayner kept a clean sheet for his side against Grays Athletic live on Setanta Sports on Sunday evening. Our biggest money transfer could only settle for a place on the bench however as Lee John made a cameo appearance in the 85th minute for Newport County in their 0-0 draw at Bishop’s Stortford in the Nationwide Conference South. John was joined on the bench by former Port Talbot Town striker Mark Dodds. In the Welsh League Andrew Pearson captained Afan Lido to a 2-2 draw at home to Bridgend Town while Alyn Jones was on target for Ton Pentre as they defeated Newport YMCA, Ton also included former Port Talbot players Ryan Shugar, Richard Carter, Dane Williams and Lee Matthews in their side. Meanwhile new Barry Town manager Gavin Chesterfield, who made one appearance for Port Talbot in 2001, guided his side to a 3-0 victory over Garden Village. 11th August 2007 Port Talbot claim convincing win over local rivals Goals from Leigh De-Vulgt, Martin Rose and Dylan Blain handed Port Talbot a 3-0 victory over Neath Athletic in the Loosmeores Solicitors Challenge Cup on Saturday at the RE/MAX Stadium. A well organised and impressive performance from new manager Tony Pennock’s side earned a very comfortable win over their newly promoted opponents although referee Brian James was the main talking point of the match through a very poor display from the match official. Both sides were reduced to ten men in an eventful match with Craig Hanford receiving a very harsh straight red card for a foul on former Port Talbot Town striker Richard French. Goalkeeper Kristian Rogers made his return to the side as Pennock watched from the touchline with the thigh injury picked up against Afan Lido last week while Gareth Phillips required stitches for a head wound from an elbow midway through the opening half to join Scott Barrow on the injury list. 10th August 2007 Double coaching debut for Pennock brothers Tony Pennock takes charge of his first competitive game on Saturday when his Port Talbot Town side take on newly promoted Neath Athletic in the group stage of the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup at the RE/MAX Stadium. It will be a unique double for the Pennock family however as Tony’s brother Ray will be assisting Neath Athletic manager Andrew Dyer in their first competitive game at this level following their promotion from the Welsh Football League last season. A thigh strain has ruled Tony out of action however but Kristian Rogers has re-signed for the club to take his place in goal while striker Martin Rose and midfielder Scott Barrow will have fitness tests due to respective ankle injuries picked up during our pre-season friendlies. Dylan Blain is available for selection after his summer break although his lack of match practice makes it unlikely that he will start while Liam McCreesh played his first game for Port Talbot at Afan Lido on Tuesday night after a knee operation and will be available for selection as he returns to full fitness. Kick off is at 2.30pm. 9th August 2007 Rogers returns for Neath match Kristian Rogers has re-signed for Port Talbot Town following a thigh strain injury to player-manager Tony Pennock. Rogers had been left out of the side as Pennock played himself and more than impressed in the pre-season friendlies but picked up an injury in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Afan Lido. Rogers will now have his chance to impress the new management on Saturday when Port Talbot take on Neath Athletic at the RE/MAX Stadium in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup while Pennock will be able to assess his squad from the touchline without the worry of preparing for the game himself. Striker Martin Rose also picked up an injury at Afan Lido but he is expected to pass a fitness test ahead of the game. Kick off is at 2.30pm. 9th August 2007 Welsh Premier League fixture change The games against NEWI Cefn Druids have been reversed. The side will travel to Port Talbot Town on Saturday, 22nd September with the return match at NEWI Cefn Druids on Saturday, 26th January. 8th August 2007 Afan FM launch proposal for pre-season match The partner radio station of Port Talbot Town Football Club, 107.9 Afan FM, have proposed a North v South curtain raiser for the Principality Welsh Premier League. With no big name signings to crate interest compare to other countries national leagues, sports editor Hash has proposed a one off match between the best of the North and the best of the South to kick start the new season. There are many benefits to the idea which would create much needed interest in the league. 8th August 2007 Season Tickets Due to an unexpected delay, season tickets will not be available before Saturday’s match against Neath. Supporters who have already paid will be entitled to free admission however and those wishing to purchase a ticket ahead of the match should contact mark@porttalbottown.co.uk before the day to ensure they get their full entitlement. The tickets are priced at £90 for adults, £60 concessions and £10 for kids. 7th August 2007 Derby victory at a heavy cost Despite claiming a 1-0 victory over local rivals Afan Lido, Port Talbot suffered a double injury blow as both striker Martin Rose and goalkeeper Tony Pennock hobbled out of the game. Rose picked up an ankle injury early in the second half before Pennock had to replaced in goal by Robert Cockings after suffering a thigh strain and both players are now a doubt for Saturday’s home match against Neath Athletic. Gareth Phillips handed Port Talbot the lead after twenty minutes when his effort was deflected in by a Lido defender in a game where chances were few and far between. New signing Daniel Lancey again impressed on the left of midfield while youth team players Sam Baker and Luke Pearson made their debuts for the team from the bench. The side are now back in action on Saturday when they take on Neath Athletic in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup at the RE/MAX Stadium. Kick off is at 2.30pm. 5th August 2007 Hodgson grabs equaliser for Under-19s Striker Nathan Hodgson scored an 85th minute equaliser as our Under-19 side drew 2-2 with Llantwit Major on Sunday. The home side twice took the lead with two penalties while Luke Fitzpatrick scored the other Port Talbot Town goal. 4th August 2007 Bond on target in dominating performance A 44th minute goal from Chad Bond was enough for Port Talbot to claim a victory over Welsh League side Bryntirion Athletic in a game they dominated from the start. A more familiar starting line-up from manager Tony Pennock saw Port Talbot create a number of chances in this pre-season friendly but poor finishing and a fine performance from the opposition goalkeeper kept the score down. An injury to Scott Barrow was the only concern for the side on the day but his ankle injury is not as bad as first thought and he is expected to be available for Saturday’s home match against Neath Athletic in the Loosemores Solicitors Challenge Cup. Port Talbot Town are now in action on Tuesday night at local rivals Afan Lido and they will be keen to carry on their recent performances into this match. Kick off is at 7.00pm. 3rd August 2007 Pennock prepares for season at Bryntirion Port Talbot Town manager Tony Pennock takes his side to Welsh League Bryntirion Athletic on Saturday, 4th August, and will look to use the match to prepare his side or the opening game of the season against Neath Athletic the following weekend. A number of trialists have featured for the club over the last three friendlies but Pennock is expected to name a more familiar starting line-up this weekend and also against Afan Lido on Tuesday, 7th August. New signing Liam McCreesh remains on the treatment table following his knee operation but has began light training with the side while Dylan Blain and David Burrows are both set to return. Bryntirion Athletic are managed by former Port Talbot player Francis Ford and have already claimed a victory over Haverfordwest County in pre-season. New signing Robbie Walters has been in excelllent form following his recent move from Maesteg Park and the side will provide difficult opposition for the team. Kick off is at 2.30pm. 3rd August 2007 Edwards to support summer football move Port Talbot Town Chairman Andrew Edwards has joined the increasing number of club managers and officials by supporting Principality Welsh Premier League Secretary John Deakin’s plan for a move to summer football. All four Welsh Premier League clubs went out of European competition in the opening round this season to further strengthen the case with lack of match preparation before playing teams in the middle of their domestic season the main cause for poor European results. Despite Llanelli manager Peter Nicholas being in favour of the move, Rhyl manager John Hulse is set against the idea and does not believe it can work emphasising the split in opinion across the league. "I think from a personal point of view that we do need to move on," said Andrew Edwards. "European results have not been good enough. My two concerns are that, firstly, the quality of the pitches would have to improve. The other issue is that clubs may have to contract players for the whole year, or they could play for other teams in the winter season. If these issues can be sorted out, then let’s give it a go." 1st August 2007 Lancey signs after impressing in pre-season Daniel Lancey has signed for Port Talbot Town after an impressive three games for the club in pre-season friendlies. The former Swansea City youngster made his debut against the Swans last week and followed a strong performance with further impressive displays against Caldicot Town on Saturday and against Cardiff City on Tuesday night. The Swansea born winger is new manager Tony Pennock’s third new signing of the season and more are expected in the next few weeks. 1st August 2007 Friendlies arranged for Under-19 team Our Under-19 team have arranged two friendlies ahead of the MacWhirter Welsh Football League Youth Dvision West season. The side travel to Llantwit Major on Sunday, 5th August and will then take on Merthyr Tydfil at the RE/MAX Stadium on Thursday, 16th August. The side are managed by Keith Hanford and Huw Morgan.
