Port Talbot Town Football Club Academy News Archive - 2007-2008
31st May 2008 A look back over the season by Mark Pike, Under-14‘s Academy coach Season 07/08 was a season to remember for many reasons. Leaving behind the local scene, which we dominated for many years winning league & cup doubles two years on the trot to go into the unknown academy scene. First up AFC Bournemouth COE away, an excellent performance from all involved but the long bank holiday traffic took its toll on some players, fitness was the decisive factor where we go down 3 nil. An experience these young players will never forget. Next came Pontardawe AFC where we bounced back to out play a strong committed side and win the game 2-1. Many games passed where results did not go our way, this being a fresh start and culture shock for many players and parents who were used to seeing this young team win convincingly against all that was put in front them. After a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of a physical Oxford Utd side,( heaviest defeat ever!!!) the penny had to drop soon with some. As coaches we now had to work harder than ever before especially after this defeat by keep the moral of the team going - some players expressing to leave the new scene as it was too difficult but we managed to keep them together and got the moral back and next up Barry Town. We wanted to see if we could bounce back, we questioned players belief, attitude and commitment on and off the field, gone were the days when all we had to do was turn up, a performance fit enough for the premiership with a resounding 14 nil win and they did they enjoy it, not the win but their performance!. The smiles were back the belief was there and we soon turned the corner. The football was free flowing and we now mixing it with the best. Up came the Lido, a convincing 4-1 win ensured we went into the Christmas break smiling and looking forward to 2008. The boys return in good spirit and were looking forward to the 2nd half of the season, unfortunately we do not kick a ball until 24th Feb some 9 weeks after the Lido game for monsoon weather playing havoc with the pitches. Haverfordwest being the next opponents and again some great football seen by both teams and a pleasure to watch and coach after winning the game 2-1 we entertain Swansea City Dev (u15), physicality was the difference in this game, a Swansea side two years older than some of our young boys but again a great performance and we are back to doing what they are taught – playing football with enjoyment and plenty of smiles. Soon we lose Sam Hodge and Luke Edwards after being called into the Boys Club of Wales squad, a great achievement for them both where they went on to beat Scotland. Our season had to continue and we did with great conviction, great attitude and committment in the pressure of academy football. The season came to an end with an exciting trip to the might of the premiership at Blackburn Rovers academy. A very close encounter and the football and experience were first class. We lost the game 3-2 endured a very serious ankle injury to Jordan Edwards who ended up with a hospital visit and on crutches, but learnt one hell of lot from this experience. The Academy in all it’s frustrations has been great, we await what happens next term and hope the FAW will come up trumps and prevent these young boys from going back into the local scene.. to recap a great season with fantastic experience gained by all. These boys including myself and our coaches have certainly learnt from the experience and all hope to play and coach at this level for years to come and go from strength to strength and push these boys all the way to youth and hopefully OUR first team. 3rd May 2008 Town lose legs in last ten minutes in an excellent experience Having worked very had all season after dropping out of local league football and playing at a higher and harder level of football we were rewarded with a trip to Ewood Park and to play against Blackburn Rovers Academy. What a great experience for myself, the players and parents. Before the game I kept telling the lads this is why we play Academy football as today we were playing Blackburn Rovers from the Premier League, not Afan Lido or Porthcawl, so lets go out and enjoy and that you will only enjoy the experience if you give your all otherwise you will regret it for a long time. Thankfully they did give their all. In the first period we started trying to close down their passing and we did through being focused, disciplined and prepared for anything. Our back four were fantastic as was Rhys in goal and Calvin went close to putting us ahead as the first period finished 0-0. In the team talk the boys were buzzing, encouraging and had the big B word belief. Blackburn changed their tactics in the next period and started to run with the ball more instead of passing as much but we held our lines well and our midfield and forward were working their socks off. Rhys again made some fantastic saves and we then put some good passing together and found Calvin who used his strength and speed and a great finish to put us in front! It was if there were 50,000 people in the ground as everyone was ecstatic. We then went close to making it 2-0 but an unlucky deflection found their striker and Blackburn drew level. A corner then put them in front and our boys were becoming tired and could not wait for the refs whistle to bring the period to a close. In the final period we knew we were playing for time more than we normally do but we gave our all and Calvin went close. Our defending by Alex, Tom, Evan and Ryan was fantastic as everyone. New lad Zack Coombes then rounded the goalkeeper and made it 3-2 (you had a great game Zack) and we were unlucky not to draw level from an Alex free-kick. The last ten minutes however we could not compete as Blackburn were outstanding and we were dead on our feet at one stage with only nine players on the field at one stage through tiredness. Blackburn then made us pay and the final score was 7-2. But we were fantastic and were everything that Port Talbot Town is about. The Blackburn coach was very impressed and the officials said that we gave them their hardest game for a long time. I am proud of everyone of you lads you all did yourselves proud and I told them that if you can take that performance into next seasons Academy games it will not matter who we play as we will have no reason to fear anyone. Rhys, Tome, Evan, Alex, Zack, Ash, Calvin, Mac Evans, Nathan, Lloyd, Kieron, Nathan and Darcy, you were all great. Man of the Match - Rhys Parry. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
3rd May 2008 Academy impress against Blackburn Rovers Our Academy Under-12 and Under-14 sides rounded-off their inaugural Academy season in style with fixtures against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday. Despite losing 7-2, the Under-12 side held their opponents for most of the game with goals from Calvin Wellington and Zack Coombes making the score 3-2 with just ten minutes left. The Under-14 side also lost but by a close margin of 3-2 but the game was marred by an injury to Jordan Edwards that required hospital treatment.
31st April 2008 Town continue jinx against Reds This is the fifth tome that we have played Llanelli this season and with one loss and three draws we were determined to put things right just before our trip to Blackburn Rovers. Still without Alex today he was replaced with our new signing Zac Coombes and there will be more new faces for next season. In the first period we played some good football, passing from the back and we looked very relaxed. Clavin nearly hit the net while Nathan and Mac both went close but it stayed 0-0. Llanelli hit the woodwork in the second period twice but we were still in control and Calvin, who was outstanding today, ran with the ball before cutting inside and finishing neatly to make it 1-0 to the Blues. In the third period we should have wrapped the game up but we were also lucky that the home side again struck the posts. I then made four changes with Blackburn in mind and it sent out a chance to Llanelli. In fairness they were all over us in the last five minutes but their goal was hard to take and again the Llanelli jinx was upon us. Well done to Llanelli though they have a great set-up, great coach and always give their all. I will now look forward to our trip to Ewood Park. Man of the match - Calvin for his confidence, speed, strength, top finish and great attitude. Well done! David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
16th April 2008 Impressive comeback brings victory for Blues Over the last year our Under-12 Academy have built up a friendly rapore with Garden Village and once again we would like to thank them for their welcome again at this match. Without our goalkeeper and two other players due to injury we had a bare eleven but on the positive side we welcomed back Joe Gage for the match. The game fo the first two periods was very difficult with strong winds forcing route one football. In the first period we with the wind but struggled to cope with the long ball game and it was the home side that created the best chances but the score stayed level. In the second period Garden Village fancied their chances and put everything into their game. They were determined to turn us over for the first time. A poor clearance let their striker take a pop at stand in keeper Evan and made it a well deserved 1-0 to the home side. They could have scored again but for Ryan’s defending. We drew level with great determination from Mac and then we switched things to play with more width but the conditions were poor. Village scored again and looked like winners. In the final period we were 2-1 down but the wind eased and that was our call. Taylor opened them up time and time again and I switched Evan to midfield. Ash found Calvin and he made it 2-2 and within two minutes of the equaliser Calvin added another to make it 3-2. We could have scored again but time ran out. I thought when the conditions were good we looked like winners but over the whole game I think they deserved a draw at least as every one of the Village players gave their all. Well done. As for us well done lads, good patience and good spirit (Thanks Evan for playing wherever asked). Man of the match - Taylor Golding. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
6th April 2008 Close game but Swans deserved win For the fourth time this season we again faced Swansea City Under-12‘s, with one draw and two wins to us they are always close, tough games and this was another that could have gone either way. In freezing conditions at Underhill Park in Mumbles we were without two key players in Alex and Taylor but I thought we still had enough to put in a performance. I asked the lads today to think back to our last game and take a look at themselves, I didn’t want a result, I wanted a performance to the standard that I know we are capable of. In the first period it was nip and tuck, an even game but the home side were winning the midfield battles and it proved costly as they went 2-0 up after just twelve minutes. We started to create chances and forced five corners in a short period of time and were unlucky not to score from each of them. In the second period the Swans number 15 took a half chance very well, very early and we were trailing 3-0 despite still playing very well and I kept encouraging the side to keep plugging away. Swansea were getting tired in the third and final period and we were gaining the upper hand, Evan pulled a goal back with a great lob and we were suddenly in with a shout. The game was becoming very stop and start however with the Swansea players staying down after nearly every tackle. The referee however was good and he stopped the clock every time. A great ball from Macauley Evans found Calvin Wellington who then darted down the middle and a top quality finish made it 3-2 but time ran out and we lost the game. As I said though the performance was very pleasing so well done lads, the hard work you have put in during training again paid off and we once again looked like an Academy side. Man of the match was Macauley Evans. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
9th March 2008 Town lose in close encounter As the 1st Team lost a few days before against Llanelli in a game they didn’t deserve to lose it was repeated today by the scoreline for the Under-12 Academy side. After such a fantastic victory last Sunday against a top Swansea City side it was inevitable that we would come back down to Earth today. We started brightly and from the off opened up their defence, Calvin was unlucky and Evan had two shots also and to be honest in the first period I could not see the away side scoring as it ended 0-0. In the second period and against the wind Llanelli improved and looked strong on the ball but did not put us under any real danger. We defended really well and looked in control of the game although it did become scrappy. In the final period a lapse in concentration cost us and they pounced and took the lead. We tried very hard to push the game and became frustrated. From a game we controlled we were now losing. I think the players were trying too hard and were becoming increasingly frustrated and started to blame the ref (even though he wasn’t the best) and that is something you cannot do. Final score 1-0 to Llanelli, their first win of the season and well done to them. I think that today was one of those days and perhaps not a team performance. Plus points for us were our back four who were great today and a double man of the match to Alex and Ryan. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
2nd March 2008 Plenty of positives in defeat to older Swans On turning up to the game we were astounded to find out that a Swansea City side could not raise enough under 14 players to make the sure the game went ahead. With all the teams in Swansea,Neath, Port talbot and Bridgend they resorted to pulling 7 u15 players from their older age group, very shocked by their decision!!! this did not deter the boys. The boys battled and showed great character and were by far the better footballing side with Jordan Edwards, Ryan Morgan and Aaron Ryan in great form. Some sloppy defending and poor refereeing saw us go down 4-0 in the end which was not a fair reflection on the game. We deserved more, should have got more but will take a lot of positives from the game, the football was only played by our boys keeping it on the deck for Swansea to result in a long ball game (Wimbledon Way!!) that relied on their superior physical strength to ensure their victory. As far as I am concerned we got a lot out of the game, Great character, outstanding battling team performance all the trade marks of us of old. We are gelling now, new faces settling well.... the last two performances shows how far we have come since the start of the season and hope this is just the start and will finish the season on a high and go from strength to strength, just in time for the Blackburn trip in May.. KEEP IT GOING LADS. Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
2nd March 2008 Blues earn a great victory over a strong Swans side After a poor performance by our standards last week, myself and Huw Lloyd asked for character and a good attitude to bounce back. We knew we were playing a top side today and we needed to be 100% switched on. On a small pitch which suited the home side the match was all about good defending and chances came but were cancelled out by both sides as an even first period ended 0-0. In the second period we started better and created a couple of openings, Evan Corcoran went close and Taylor Golding nearly put us ahead but it was super-sub Darcy who did it again, finding space and his strike made it 1-0 to us. From that moment Swansea came at us. They had good possession and played a good passing game but some great tracking back by Ashley, Nathan and new land Macauley in midfield was superb and prevented the home side creating many chances. However a mistake let them in and made it 1-1, a deserved scoreline I thought. In the interval our boys were told to keep it up but we needed to be a bit more physical, not aggressive, but strong and we were. We started to win out battles to gain the upper hand and a ball from Tom found Calvin (although ill he still played) and he made a great run on the right before putting in a fantastic cross for Evan who had made 15 yards to clip the ball in to make it 2-1. Top football and from then on we were not about to lose, we wanted this as they came at us in the last seven minutes. Our defending was fabulous. Today was another great result, it is what Academy football is all about. Changing rooms buzzing and a great atmosphere amongst the lads. Well done lads again I am proud of you. There is still room for improvement though so look out Wednesday in training. Man of the match today was Thomas Murray, the smallest player on the pitch but strength like Hercules. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
24th February 2008 Blues lose out to the better side The standard of football at Acadmey level is high and it shows that if you are not on your game on the day you will get turned over. Today we were in the game but not at our usual standard and we deserved to lose. We started well and created a chance in the first minute from which we were unlucky not to score, all also played well down the flanks and opened them up on two or three occasions but after that there was little to talk about. The away side played some good football, passing well and showing us they wanted revenge for the stuffing we gave them a fortnight ago. In the second period they were the much better side and we had no communication from the back to upfront and they deservedly took the lead from a mistake by us as we failed to close them down from a short corner. In the final period we upped our game to win the second phase ball but could not create anything, frustration kicked in and and to be honest we did not deserve anything from the game. It was a close game though and we learned a number of lessons from it. We have to play as a team and we cannot afford to take teams for granted, which I think we did. Like I said this is not local and you cannot afford to just turn it up 60%. As with previous poor performances however we will learn from it and correct things for our next match. Man of the Match today was Even Corcoran, I think he just gave a little bit more. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
20th February 2008 Blues impress in RE/MAX Stadium friendly This was a special game, not just because it was my 40th birthday, but because we had two good teams that played some great football on a fantastic playing surface under floodlights at our own ground, the RE/MAX Stadium. A big thank you to Chairman Andrew Edwards, we all know what a great job he does with the senior team but has also shown us great support at junior level. Well done and a big thank you. The visitors were the far better side in the opening period of the game and played some good football. Port Talbot created the best chance though as Calvin Wellington created space with his strength and determination to hand us a 1-0 lead against the run of play. As I said, Cwrt Herbert were playing well and they soon drew level to make it 1-1. From the refs whistle to start the second period we started to look like an academy side, playing at pace, passing neatly and controlling the game. Some trickery by Taylor ‘Ronaldo’ Golding made enough space for himself and a perfect finish made it 2-1. Darcy then took his chance and made it 3-1 and I think we deserved it although the away side kept plugging away and pulled another goal back. In the last period we had some good chances and should have put them away but we created them from moved that we have worked on in training and that was pleasing for us. The fourth goal arrived from Joe Gage and there were some great performances out there from the back to upfront. Well done lads. Man of the Match was Calvin Wellington, he had everything tonight - Fantastic. Well done also to Evan Corcoran who played as goalkeeper as Rhys got injured before the game. I would like to thank all my squad members and parents for the cards and special gifts after the game for my 40 th birthday. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
28th January 2008 Edwards grabs Academy debut hat-trick Ashley Edwards made an impressive debut for our Under-12 Academy side at Haverfordwest on Sunday as he grabbed three goals in the 4-2 victory. Calvin Wellington scored the other in the impressive win that was played on the hosts Welsh Premier League ground. The Under-16 side went down 3-2 however with Anthony Roberts and Justin Protheroe on the scoresheet.
27th January 2008 Hat-Trick for Ashley on first game A fantastic and disciplined performance earned us a victory in this hard fought game at the Haverfordwest Bridge Meadow Stadium. The lads have not played for six weeks and with another two new players coming in we knew we were in for a game but out training over the last month has been spot on. The home side started very well, coming at us time and time again in the first period but our back four were great and so was Rhys. End of the first period and we were lucky to be on level terms. We then used the big pitch to our advantage and a great run from Taylor found our new striker Ash to neatly finish to make it 1-0. Our second goal was vintage Calvin Wellington, winning the ball strong, using his pace down the line before providing Ashley with a superb cross for him to score with a great header. Both sides had chances in the third period but again we defended well with Nathan Carter also having a very good game. Ashley then completed his hat-tick with another neat finish (what a first game!). Calvin scored the fourth goal when he rounded the keeper and it looked to be the perfect result with 90 seconds left. We switched off however, this is not the local league, this is Academy football, and we paid the price conceding two silly goals. We will correct this in training but well done lads, we beat a very good side. Well done to you all. Man of the match is hat-trick hero Ashley Edwards. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
19th December 2007 The season so far It has been a long hard learning curve for both players and coaches of this very successful side. After dominating the local scene and scoring for fun for many years it was time to push these youngsters into another scene and another level. Playing non-competitive football (if there is such a thing!!), it was time to test their ability, attitude, stamina and character. Playing pro clubs, F.C. Bournemouth, Oxford Utd, Swansea City (Dev) and many more during second half of the season including Exeter, return of Oxford and Blackburn not forgetting the long travelling to league of Wales sides up North and as far as Broughton where we played Airbus, all of which has been a great experience. Unfortunately the travelling and standard we are now playing has come with some casualties, players not wanting to do it anymore and have gone back into the local scene with comments “its too hard”. We have come a long way since the opening day fixture at Bournemouth, New faces have arrived, many new players still wishing to join our experience and more notably the sad faces from many players as results not going our way are a distant memory. We coaches have worked hard to get the smiles back and playing the way it should be with full enjoyment as well as ensuring the players, this is for their development and future years in the game at the highest standard possible. Whilst some results have not gone our way, the players now know they have to work harder than that of the local scene to gain the results they have been desperate for this term so far. The hard work in training is paying dividends, results are starting to go our way, the smiles are back and the players have now taken on board to except a win as a loss. In previous years where they dominated and won almost everything possible, they never once experienced results as they have this term. They never expected the 7 –1 loss at Oxford as that was the heaviest defeat these boys have had against them. Then came the Lido & local bragging rights, bragging rights remain with our boys where a 4-1 victory ensured we are still around just not in the local scene anymore. The smiles are back and the boys enjoying their football again, hopefully the attitude, character, commitment and enjoyment will still be with us when we return for an away trip to an Exeter elite side 6th Jan 2008. I want to take this opportunity to thank all connected with the club, Academy, Players and parents of 14’s for their patience and early mornings and late returns. I wish you all a very Happy Xmas and prosperous New Year. Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
19th December 2007 Late equaliser brings a fair result Western Avenue was as cold as ice for the final Academy game of 2007 v Aberystwyth. The game was a great encounter with both sides going for the win. Early exchanges fell to our youngsters against the freezing cold wind. Newly created full back Ryan Morgan (From striker to full back!! have we found a new right Back?, I think so!!!) linking well with Ryan Mckeegan down the right, some great play from that area of the pitch was evidently seen. Aber themselves created a few chances but for some wonderful positioning play of Goalkeeper Aaron Ryan kept them at bay. The best opportunity of the first period fell to Daniel Pugh after James Williams was pushed in the box and a penalty was awarded. Unfortunately after the penalty miss, Aber broke away and were awarded a free - kick 25 yards from Goal, a resulting wonder strike that was fit for the premiership sailed into the net leaving Aaron no chance just before the stroke of halftime saw us go in 1 down. At Half time saw some big changes, Jordan & Luke Edwards, Perry Courtney came on to try and push for equalising goal. Several chance went begging, a number cleared off the line, Aaron in superb form in goal preventing Aber from going 2 up as they hit us on the break. Soon the boys started to dictate game and further chances went begging, a few goalmouth scrambles still the ball would not go in, Aber GK pulling off some great saves to keep them with their slender lead. Some how the second period ended still 1 down. The boys now showing great belief that they could still go on and win the game, their character was awesome and attitude fantastic throughout, we dominated the 3rd and fourth and were just wondering where that goal was coming from when in the final few seconds a free kick was awarded our way - A superbly flighted free-kick from Sam Hodge straight onto the head of Sean Tenant at the back post who made sure the end result was a fair one at 1 each. Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
16th December 2007 Blues defeated on last kick of the game With freezing conditions and a strong blustery wind the Academy Under-12‘s side welcomed Aberystwyth Town for this re-arranged FAW fixture. With two new faces coming in to our line up in Alex and Owen we started the game quite well and forced three corners in the opening five minutes, then in the middle of the first period, a great ball from Cory found Evan Corcoran who ran down the left hand side, cut in and a great strike made it 1-0. The away side were unlucky not to draw level when they were awarded a penalty which hit the post before the end of the first period. Second period and we were against the wind, we defended well and we lost Calvin Wellington half way through due to illness. Aberystwyth came close twice and the 3rd time was lucky for them as they just beat our keeper to make it 1-1. The final third and it was an even game with both teams keeping shape at the back but not creating many chances the match looked a certain draw until a dubious free kick given against us. The kick was taken and a fantastic save by Rhys was put in on the rebound by the number 9‘s hand but unfortunatly the ref did not see it. Overall I think the away side just shaded it however. Well done to the new boys today and well done to all the boys on another good performance. Man of the Match - Ryan John and Thomas Murray. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
25th November 2007 Win well deserved as Blues defeat local rivals The Lido arrived in confident mood after seeing some of our results of late, they started brightly and within six minutes of the start we go one down from an own goal. The boys soon bounced back and the smiles were as wide as Western Avenue with an emphatic academy win over local rivals Afan Lido. A thumping 4-1 win was well deserved, Goals from Luke Edwards (Own goal) Liam Jenkins, Oliver Bowen, Ryan McKeegan & Jordan Edwards were enough to see off the Lido. The boys were well up for it and played like they been taught, getting it wide with early delivery and the strikers on the end of it. Three of the four goals came from wide and one with some very quick feet of Jordan Edwards to seal the victory. A well deserved victory that ensured there is only one team in the borough of PORT TALBOT TOWN. Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
25th November 2007 Blues suffer defeat but will learn from experience We knew we were in for a tough game today when the away side arrived with quite a few new players but being an Academy team we gave it our all. 1st quarter- we started ok and took the game to them with Calvin Wellington dominating the left hand side we created a couple of chances and then a great lob by Taylor Golding gave us the lead. Lido made a few changes and drew level through a great strike by their new striker ( he had a great game) to make it 1-1. 2nd quarter against the wind we defended well with Ryan John and Thomas Coaches Man of the Match - Calvin Wellington & Taylor Golding Afan FM Man of the Match - Thomas Murray David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
18th November 2007 McKeegan and Silva on target in draw A 2-2 draw was the final result on wind and rain soaked Western Avenue in this friendly match. Goals from Ryan McKeegan and a wonder strike from Chris Silva kept it 2 each. It was pleasing to see the bays once again knocking the ball around with bags of confidence but we still keep giving gifts away at the back. Ponty's first should have been dealt with ease by Aaron Ryan (gk) but slight hesitation allowed Josh Roberts to equalise against the run of play. Oliver Bowen and Sam Hodge at the back were terrific with Chris Silva dictating the game from the middle. A 2 -2 result being a fair one in poor conditions. The boys showed glimpses of character and were back to their best for 20 mins of the game, they are on their way back, training has been excellent, soon we will turn the bad corner and the smiles will keep coming back and get mixing it with the best. keep it going lads!!!! Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
11th November 2007 Defeat for Blues despite creating chances Its a funny old game is football, as some would say!! This weekend saw the boys come back down to earth after the 14 - 0 mauling of Barry Town last week. The boys having some mixed results this term with this weekend being no different. We certainly know how to give away gifts at the moment!!, just 3 minutes into the game and the first gift is given away and we are 1 down with some sloppy defending. The first period does not get any better and soon we are two down going into the interval. Some stern talking and some changes at H/T to the team, we start the second period fairly brightly creating one or two chances but no-one on the end to finish, by now the Neath or should I say Swansea Development Goalkeeper has had to pull off three very good saves for them to retain their lead until a lapse of concentrating and are 3 down against the run of play going into the third period. the final period saw yet another breakaway goal to end the game 4 - 0. A very heavy wind spoilt the game for both sides and it was difficult to get the ball down to play. In all fairness to the boys they did battle but with too many changes during the game made it difficult to get into a rhythm, something the coaching staff have to sort out!! The boys are finding it difficult stepping up at the moment and I have great belief that we will turn our misfortune around very soon. We are not far away from competing with the best, players who have belief and desire to work hard alongside the coaches will be better players and our misfortune will be turned around and the smiles will start to return very soon. Together we will achieve and get it right and what a way to put it right against the Lido a week on Sunday...Have great belief and desire to achieve lads!!!. Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
11th November 2007 Corcoran double seals victory A great performance today paid off with a deserved victory although it was a very tough game. Apart from Bournemouth and Oxford this team were by far the best team team we have played this season. With Macauley Ley injured in the warm-up we started with Nathan upfront alongside Calvin Wellington. Neath started the sharpest and created the best chances but they were attacking only on one side so I pushed Evan from full back to play upfront with Calvin and with Clavin playing a bit wider we looked to open them up and we did with a great ball from Calvin to Evan to make it 1-0. Neath were unlucky not to draw level with a missed penalty but we deserved our lead as the game went into the second period. Against the wind Neath equalised with a great strike and it could have gone either way. Our midfield were great again today with Gagy and Callum in complete control of the match. Ten minutes from the end of the 2nd period I switched Evan again to wide-left and agian he showed his versatility by going past one defender before a great strike made it 2-1 to the blues. In the last period both sides created chances with great defending by both sides cancelling the other out. Final score 2-1 to the Blues. I think today was our best performance of the season and again with some top individual performances and a great team effort. The only thing that spoiled the day was the attitude of the away sides coaches who were, to say the least, bad losers. Coaches Man of the Match - Evan Corcoran. Afan FM Man of the Match - Connor Prosser. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
4th November 2007 Top performance by Blues A very good performance today was matched with the correct attitude and commitment, which we missed in last weeks game. Today’s game was a great match, Garden Village were a big, strong and physical side but I knew from the changing room talk today that the squad wanted to make amends for last week. In the first period we dominated. Ash hit the post and a great ball by Macauley Ley found Calvin Wellington to make the score 1-0 with a great finish. Macauley then scored with a neat finish to round off an excellent performance by him. In the second period Garden Village kept plugging away but with the midfield controlled by Joe Gage and Connor playing out of his skin I really couldn’t see them scoring. Gagy scored thanks again to great work by Macauley and Calvin and then Ashley made it 4-0. In the third period our goalkeeper Rhys was called into action three time after having nothing to do and pulled off three great saves with help from Joel who was also brilliant today. Evan then scored the fifth with a wonder strike (he played in midfield today and showed that he can play in any position). Macauley then rounded things off with another cook finish to make it 6-0 at the final whistle. For the second time this season I cannot pick a man of the match, it was a team performance. Man of the match therefore was the whole team, well done lads. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
28th October 2007 Academy cruise to fourteen goal victory With the season well on its way the Academy U14’s have found the going quite tough at times but Sunday was different! Even with eleven of the boys having already competed in at least 40 minutes in the Boys & Girls club’ s of Wales trial earlier in the day they were still able to turn on a performance that we have been waiting for. Sadly Barry Town failed to join the party and were overwhelmed by a rampant Town side and found themselves four goals down inside of the first ten minutes with goals coming from Liam Jenkins, Ryan Mc’Keegan and a brace from Jordan Edwards. There was very little in regards of defiance coming from the Barry ranks and Port Talbot just ran riot scoring three more in the first twenty minute period with goals being scored by Ryan Morgan and Liam Jenkins completing a very good hatrick. The second period saw the town’s youngsters concentrate more on team performance and ball retention than foraging for more goals. But goals are what this team are made of when in this mood and it was no surprise that three more were scored in this period with Daniel Pugh , Jordan Edwards completing his hatrick & Liam Jenkins getting his fourth. The final period saw our boys losing their shape as they went for more goals and loads of chances missed as wrong options were being made all over the field. A lesson to be learned that doing the right things always bring more goals. But Barry weren’t going to get away lightly and four more goals came in the last ten minutes with James Williams scoring twice and two own goals heaping more misery on a depleted Barry defence. Sadly not the game we had hoped for as we came out of local football to avoid such scores, but the lads can only play what is in front of them and hopefully our next opponents will offer a much sterner test than 14 Vs 0. For the record, goal scorers were Lam Jenkins 4, Jordan Edwards 3, James Williams 2, Own goals 2 and a goal each for Ryan McKeegan, Ryan Morgan and Daniel Pugh. Wayne Edwards Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s
28th October 2007 Frustrating performance as Town held by Barry This match was a very frustrating game to watch as Port Talbot were well above Barry Town all over the park (no disrespect to our opponents) but we should and could have won this game comfortably. We started ok but gave the ball away to many times as our passing was bad, Macauley Ley had two great chances but missed and that was it. I could not see us conceding a goal but couldn’t believe how slow and half hearted we were as the first period finished 0-0. The game restarted and we were poor, no very poor, it seemed as if we did not even want to be there. Barry scored two goals and they deserved them 2-0 to the home side. The last period and our players went into it after a rolicking and they new it, it was so FRUSTRATING!!!!!!!!- WE WERE A DIFFERENT TEAM! I put Evan Corcoran up-front with Calvin Wellington and we looked sharp, the game was opened up, Evan hit the post, then we had a goal disallowed for offside, then a great ball from Calvin to Evan made it 1-2. From Barry’s kick off we pounced and within 40,seconds we made it 2-2, a great strike from Gagy, Evan then had the ball over the line which the ref didn’t see (we had a top referee today he was great) and after that three further strikes, one hitting the inside of the post. We were top notch and would have won comfortably if we had played like that all game. CALVIN WELLINGTON TODAY RUN HIS SOCKS OFF, HE NEVER GETS THE CREDIT HE DESERVES. TODAY HE MADE ME PROUD, CONNOR, RHYS, RYAN AND TOM WERE ALSO BRILLIANT. MAN OF THE MATCH THOUGH WAS EVAN CORCORAN. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
21st October 2007 Under-12‘s Outclassed but plenty to learn from seven goal defeat This game today was a learning curve for everyone involved in my Under-12 set-up, we were beaten by a top side who we simply could not compete against. They had four players who were head and shoulders above everyone and already on contract with the Football League and we can have no complaints with their quality. The game however was spoilt by the referee who was only aged 14 and this was his first game in charge. He allowed three offside goals which were laughable (I mean 15-20 yards offside not just 5) and our Welfare Officer Eddie Phillips had to discuss this their people to change things it was that poor. In the first period we were three goals down after ten minutes, two were clearly offside, but they played some great football in fairness to them. During the break I had to give a team talk to keep my players heads up and to battle. After the second period we were five down, again we battled hard but lost three players through injury and Nathan Carter had to take over as goalkeeper. A great moment then occurred when an Academy assistant referee arrived and ran the line. Wow! For the next 15 minutes every ball played forward by Oxford was offside and they became very frustrated which worked in our favour. For the last ten minutes we battled hard and came close to scoring but it was a game we couldn’t have won with 14 players. We played a team that were a level above us and credit to them. I am gutted as a coach as I do not like losing at anything and I have instilled that into my players but reality kicked in today. What was great however was at the final whistle as our boys went to the centre circle after shaking hands and sang our famous Port Talbot Town song. Well done lads. Man of the match today was Calum Beynon. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
21st October 2007 Academy win for Under-16‘s at Oxford United Our Under-16 Academy side claimed a superb 2-1 win over Football League club Oxford United on Sunday. The other two sides did not fare as well however as our Under-12 side were comfortably defeated 7-0 and our Under-14 side were also heavily defeated 7-1.
14th October 2007 Under-12‘s hold Llanelli and almost sneak a win With four top players out through injury we went to our 2nd FAW Academy game raw but still confident of a result but in the first five minutes of the opening period i had to adjust our team, this Llanelli team was a totally different team from three weeks ago, in fact they were TWICE THE SIZE! We had to defend as they created chance after chance and to be fair for the score to be 0-0 end of the 1st period we were lucky. In the 2nd period we went out for a battle and Conner Prosser, Cory Morris and Ryan John were our bravehearts, but also I could see the home side getting frustrated as we gave them a much tougher game and the score remained 0-0. We went into the last period and I thought lets go for it, they didn’t expect this and it nearly paid off with Ash Davies, Taylor Golding and Nathan Carter coming close to scoring. We also had the last chance of the game with Calvin Wellington through on goal and one-on-one with the keeper but his effort went just inches wide as they game finished 0-0. I was pleased with the result and performance taking into account the injuries and turning up to play a strong and very different Llanelli team. Man of the Match was Cory Morris (well done). Team - Rhys Parry, Tom Murray, Joel Healey (4 mins), Conner Prosser, Cory Morris, Ash Davies, Taylor Golding, Macauley Ley, Nathan Carter, Callum Beynon and Calvin Wellington. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
14th October 2007 Still no luck in white! Our Under-14‘s travelled once again to Llanelli for a repeat fixture and we again outplayed our bigger and stronger opponents for large parts of the game but once again lost. Is it those white jerseys? Some great passing movements in the first period , but no end product. In fact Llanelli showed their threat with more direct football , but our keeper Aaron Ryan made a number of good saves to keep the scores blank. In the second period we were hit by 3 quick goals all very similar, a combination of naive defending and good finishing saw Llanelli take control of the game. Our heads dropped and it was not until the final period and after a stern talking to from Head Coach Mark Pike that we started to play again and showed real spirit to create a number of chances but the Llanelli keeper proved hard to beat. Finally, from a freekick on the right the ball was headed back across goal for that demon goal poacher Sam Hodge to get a touch and the ball sneaked in the corner of the net! We tried hard to get number two and forced a succession of corners, where keeper Aaron Ryan joined the attack, only for Llanelli to clear up field and shoot on an open goal. It looked like 4-1 but some how Ryan ran the length of the field , stuck out a telescopic leg and cleared over the bar! A good, gutsy finish to he game and the boys showed that soon they will end the curse of the white jerseys! Tony Bowen
7th October 2007 Town comeback from two goal deficit to draw Whenever Port Talbot Town and Swansea City meet it is always an enthralling encounter and so it proved in this under 12‘s Academy local derby. With the head coach David Davies away on the FAW C Licence course in Llanelli it was left to assistant coaches Dai Prosser and Rhian to take charge of the team. Against a lethargic town defence, the Swans raced into a two goal lead inside the first 10 minutes, both goals came from a lack of communication amongst the town defenders, I think we need to improve as a unit and start talking and i am sure coach David Davies will be working hard on this in the next training session, also poor finishing by the Swans kept the score down to 0-2 in the opening part of the match. One thing that must to be said for this young side is that their fighting qualities are amazing and in the 2nd period they took the game by the scruff of the neck and pinned Swansea in their own half for long periods. Their pressure paid off when Calvin Wellington gave a great pass to Ashley Davies who shot into the corner to make it 1-2. however another lapse by the Blues let the Swans in 1-3. To Port Talbot’s credit they refused to lie down and suddenly started to play and played with vengeance. Taylor Golding scored the second and the Blues new they could get something out of this game, with time running out a great ball from Gagy found Calvin Wellington who scored a deserved equaliser, after the shaky start Port Talbot finished the stronger and should have won it late on but the draw was a fair result on the day. Man of the Match for Port Talbot Town was Ryan John David Corcoran
7th October 2007 Swansea City in Academy sweep Our Academy sides were at home to Swansea City in a series of friendly fixtures on Sunday but the Football League club claimed convincing victories in the majority of the games. Six games took place at various age groups at Western Avenue with new teams in the club being introduced to Academy football. More details to follow shortly.
30th September 2007 Town get pleasing result The side started off our FAW campaign with a 4-1 win but it was a mixed performance. The first period we were against the wind and it looked again an even and predictable game but we could not get into a fast or passing style of play, and to be honest the away side had the most clear cut chances as the opening quarter ended goalless. In the second part of the match I decided to change things to make us up the tempo and try to open up the game, we pushed up Taylor Golding and shuffled another two players in different roles and it worked. We started our passing game at pace and in fifteen minutes we killed the game, good work from Calvin Wellington and Macauley Ley found Taylor Golding and he made no mistake to make it 1-0, pushing and pushing we forced a corner and a great delivery was headed in by Callum Beynon with a great finish to make it 2-0. Another great move soon followed as Connor Prosser played a good ball to Macauley Ley who found Ashley Davies in space and he was able to set-up Nathan Carter who finished in superb style SMASH 3-0 (Nathan had a great game today). We were now 3-0 up for the last period I tried something different and we kept the ball well. Taylor Golding went close twice before making it 4-0 but Carmarthen pulled one back to make it 4-1, this was not a great performance but it was a very pleasing result and there are plenty of positives to take from it. I am over the moon to see us working hard in training on certain aspects of our game and today it showed as a number ofthings came off for us. Men of the Match - Conner Prosser and Taylor Golding. TEAM Rhys Parry, Thomas Murray, Connor Prosser, Joel Healey, Ryan John, Evan Corcoran, Ashley Davies, Macauley Ley, Calvin Wellington, Josh Sherwood, Callum Beynon, Cory Morris and Nathan Carter. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
30th September 2007 Academy impress in latest victory Our Under-12 Academy side defeated Carmarthen Town 4-1 in the first of this seasons FAW Academy fixtures on Sunday through goals from Nathan Carter, Callum Beynon and a double strike from Taylor Golding. The only disappointment on the day was that Carmarthen were unable to field teams at Under-14 and Under-16 level leaving our respective sides without a match over the weekend. The three sides are now in action against Swansea City next weekend in which a total of five games at different age groups between the two sides will take place.
26th September 2007 Academy start domestic fixtures this weekend Following a series of high-profile and highly beneficial friendly matches, our Under-12 Academy side are in action at home to Carmarthen Town on Sunday in the opening round of FAW arranged fixtures. Port Talbot have already played games against AFC Bournemouth and Welsh Premier League clubs Llanelli, Airbus UK and Newtown and will be confident of building on their excellent performances this weekend.
23rd September 2007 Route one football the difference in Newtown defeat This was a game between two evenly matched teams who both wanted to win. In the opening period we were the better side, first in the tackle and had two great chances on goal, but Newtown towards the end of the first period forced four corners within three minutes. Our defence held well though which was very pleasing as we have worked hard on this in training. The first period ended goalless but in the second period Newtown changed their goalkeeper for a big lad with a huge kick that caused us problems, to be fair to Newtown they played good football also but it was the route one ball that caught us out a few times. Evan Corcoran got frustrated and gave away a silly free kick but, wow, what a goal from the set-piece, there was nothing our keeper could do to stop it and Newtown took the lead. The goal woke us up and our man of the match Taylor Golding, who played upfront, scored the equaliser within two minutes of the re-start. The last period and again it was the route one ball that caught us out. Two goals from long balls made it 3-1 to the visitors but we plugged away we were denied a penalty when Calvin was fouled in the area but a minute later the referee gave us a penalty when Taylor Golding was through and was brought down and Evan Corcoran made it 3-2 but we could not find the equaliser despite a late rally. The game was dedicated to Connor Prosser as his Gran sadly passed away. Connor should great courage as he still wanted to play for Port Talbot. Our thoughts are with our assistant coach David and his wife Maria along with the rest of the family at this time. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
23rd September 2007 Port Talbot back on form against Newtown Normal conditions on western avenue, namely driving rain and wind, but the boys played some lovely football at times and deserved their win, finishing much the stronger side against a physically bigger Newtown team. Port Talbot took the lead in the first period when Sam Hodge fired in a trade mark free kick from 25 yards. Then some lovely build up play down the right led to Owen Williams crossing for Jordan Edwards to produce a fine right foot finish inside the box. At 2-0 the boys were in control at the end of the first period. The second period followed a similar pattern with Port Talbot controlling midfield with Ryan McKeegan and captain Oliver Bowen creating a number of chances. But a defensive slip let Newtown pull one back and then a very debatable penalty decision, when Sam Hodge clearly won the ball, but the Ref who must have had rain in his face , pointed to the spot, 2-2. In the third period the boys put their frustrations behind them , and the Ref evened up the penalty count, and Ryan McKeegan coolly converted the spot kick. The third period finished with our fourth goal with a great ball over the top of the Newtown defence by Chase Millichip and big striker Liam Jenkins rounded the keeper and calmly finished for a deserved goal. The final period saw Port Talbot dominate , but we again gave away a sloppy goal by pressing forward for our fifth goal. The final whistle went , a very well deserved victory for the boys, back to winning ways! Tony Bowen
23rd September 2007 Academy impress against Newtown Our Academy sides played their latest round of matches on Sunday at home to Newtown and impressed with another series of good performances. The Under-14 side claimed a 4-3 victory in their match while the Under-16‘s won their encounter 2-1. The Under-12 side suffered a 3-2 defeat however in a very evenly matched game. The three sides are now in action at home to Carmarthen on Sunday, 30th September, in the opening round of FAW Academy fixtures.
17th September 2007 Academy confirm Premiership double The Port Talbot Town Academy as confirmed a massive double away fixture against two Premier League sides. On the 2nd December 2007 our three Academy sides will take on Liverpool at their World famous Academy. Players such as Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Carragher learnt their trade through the Liverpool Academy and our Under-12‘s, 14‘s and 16‘s will experience the same level when they take on the next breed of Liverpool stars. In addition the three sides will then travel to Blackburn Rovers on the 4th May 2008 in another very high-profile series of matches. The arrangement of these two massive fixtures is testament to the hard work of the people running the Port Talbot Town Academy and their impressive performances so far this season is credit to the professional approach of the players, coaches and administrative staff involved. The three sides have also confirmed games against Swansea City and Barry Town in addition to their current busy fixture lists.
16th September 2007 Davies and Ley on target in Airbus draw A hard game on the Thursday before and the long journey to North Wales on the bus took its toll as it was a flat performance by the Blues, the conditions were not the best with a powerful blustery wind proving a massive disadvantage for both teams. Airbus started with the wind in their favour and looked the most likely to score but against the run of play Macauley Ley found space and shot and Ashley Davies volleyed home to make it 1-0, however the home side levelled one minute before the break. In the 2nd period Port Talbot took advantage of the wind and started the play a little better, pushing forward and looking more dangerous and it paid off, a great run down the left hand side by Evan Corcoran who also finished with a great strike to make it 2-1. In the third period both sides had a couple of chances and with five minutes left Airbus drew level from a corner although Ashley Davies nearly won it with the last kick of the game but the draw was a fair result considering we were far from our best. Man of the match Evan Corcoran. The squad - Rhys Parry, Thomas Murray, Evan Corcoran, Joel Healey, Connor Prosser, Joe Gage, Ashley Davies, Macauley Ley, Calvin Wellington, Callum Beynon, Taylor Golding, Ryan John, Josh Sherwood, Cory Morris and Nathan Carter. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
16th September 2007 Griffiths double not enough against Airbus UK Prior to the long trip to Airbus, A late decision had to be made whether we would travel due with an injury hit squad, at the moment we have six players at the physio. With twelve fit players available, I decided along with players it was worth the trip North. Whilst travelling a further two players were hit with travel sickness but it did not deter the team to give it a go. After a very scrappy start and some mistakes early on, we soon settled and started to control the game. Airbus playing the more direct football and our young guns playing some decent football when against the run of play and sloppy defending we found ourselves two goals down. The boys bounced back and were unfortunate not to get a goal back. The second period started with us two goals down but the boys dug in well and played very good football and soon we got back in the game with an 18 yard strike from Rhys Griffiths to make it 2-1, we started to dominate and created a number of chances for yet another mistake at the back allowed Airbus to increase their lead 3-1 with 15 minutes to go. Tired legs started to kick in but we continued to try, keep the ball and do the right things. Frustrations were starting to creep in with direct ball approach from Airbus but our patience paid off with yet another 18 yard strike from Rhys Griffiths to make it 3-2, we chased and pressed the game but unfortunately it was not to be and the game ended 3-2 to Airbus UK. Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
16th September 2007 Mixed results for Academy sides at Airbus UK Our three Academy sides made the long journey to Airbus UK Broughton on Sunday in their latest series of games. The Under-16‘s won 3-2, the Under-14‘s lost 3-2 while the Under-12 side were held to a 2-2 draw.
13th September 2007 Blues win against Swansea City Centre of Excellence Our first victory of the campaign could not have been better scripted, what a game! We were given the chance to play at the RE/MAX Stadium by Secretary John Dawkins and Chairman Andrew Edwards, many thanks to oyu both. Every player of Port Talbot appreciated this and played for their club badge led by captain Macauley Ley. The game started with the Blues coming out of the blocks on fire, Joe Gage put us in front after 8 minutes then a great finish by Calvin Wellington made it 2-0 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter Swansea came out not to lose their unbeaten record and to be fair had some great chances with our goalkeeper Rhys Parry pulling off some saves that Peter Schmeichel would be proud of and the score stayed 2-0. In the third quarter we upped our game and came close to scoring three times but the Swans were not lying down and a great ball from their number ten allowed his striker partner in to make it 2-1. One minute later it was 2-2 as we allowed the Swans to equalise but we are Port Talbot and we were determined to win and reward our Chairman and club. A great ball by Conner Prosser put Calvin in and he made no mistake to make it 3-2 with 30 seconds to go. YES, WE HAD DONE IT! I must mention that every squad member was great today and man of the match was the whole team. As a coach i was proud for my club and my players. Team - Rhys Parry, Ryan John, Evan Corcoran, Connor Prosser, Joel Healey, Joe Gage, Ashley Davies, Macauley Ley, Calvin Wellington, Callum Beynon, Taylor Golding, Josh Sherwood, Thomas Murray, Cory Morris and Nathan Carter. I would also like to thank Afan FM for their support on the night and their continued support of the team and the club Academy. David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
8th September 2007 Port Talbot held by Morriston as injury problems continue With 5 key players out injured and on holidays the young under 14's squad rallied together to take on Morriston (Swansea league winners last season) who were confident in capitalising on our re-shuffled squad. With just 13 fit players available and the return of Perry Courtney from a knee injury we started the brighter side keeping possession for long periods but with no end product, Liam Griffiths, Ryan Morgan and Rhys Griffiths going close a number times and some fine saves from the Morriston keeper kept the result 0-0 at the end of the first period reducing Morriston to just 2 shots both not on target. The second period started with 3 changes and some positional changes to look at some players in unfamiliar territory, Morriston started to take charge and created a number of chances themselves, Sam Hodge now the busier keeper and making some outstanding saves to keep us in the game with Oliver Bowen the newly created sweeper keeping the strong Morriston attack force at bay. The 2nd period ended 0-0, some further changes saw the young boys dig in during the final period and turn the game around keeping the ball and creating many a good chance but again failed to take them and the game ended 0-0, not very often do we see 0-0 result with this squad, some work to be done with the strike force! Unfortunately the game ended slightly early due to yet another groin injury to our make-shift keeper Sam Hodge who volunteered to go in goal due to Aaron Ryan being on holiday. At the moment we have 4 players at the physio (2 will not make the trip) and two on holiday leaving us slightly short for the long trip to Airbus next weekend. This week will be busy trying to get the squad fit and ready for the North Wales side. Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
2nd September 2007 Town comeback twice to take draw in an excellent performance This was a game that Port Talbot were pumped up for, confident for our 1st Academy win, and how did we not win! 26 shots at goal but lady luck was not on our side, the game started well for us creating chance after chance and hitting the woodwork 3 times, Calvin wellington coming very close with the best chance of the first period. In the second period we made five changes but Llanelli upped their game and took a 1-0 lead into the last third. Port Talbot were not going to lose this game and chance after chance paid off when some great work by Taylor Golding set up Macauley Ley to make it 1-1. Being Port Talbot we pushed for the winner and Llanelli caught us on the break 2-1 but some magic from Macauley Ley with a wonder goal made it 2-2 at the final whistle. I must mention man of the match Ashley Davies who was great all game together with Callum Beynon who also played very well. Llanelli again in 3 weeks so watch this space! David Davies Port Talbot Town Under-12‘s Academy Coach
2nd September 2007 Defeat for injury-hit side despite creating chances With illnesses and injuries desamating the young Under-14 squad to just 12 available players we started the brighter and kept the ball well and for long periods creating a number of chances and failed to take them. However, some sloppy defending allowed Llanelli to score at the near post against the run of play and end the first half one down. This did not affect the pattern of play and we continued to dominate, again we continued to create some very good goal-scoring opportunities. A perfectly weighted corner from Sam Hodge allowed Chase Millichamp to level the score 1 -1 mid way through the second period. An injury to Luke Edwards allowed a Llanelli midfielder to shoot from 25 yards into the back of the net ending the second period 2-1 down. The third period was difficult and sloppy from both sides, the result ending in a 2-1 defeat. Mark Pike Port Talbot Town Under-14‘s Academy Coach
2nd September 2007 Academy sides impress at Llanelli Our three academy sides had mixed results at Llanelli on Sunday afternoon but all three impressed with excellent performances with each side creating the much better chances in their respective games. The Under-16 side led the way with a superb 4-1 victory to more than make for their 7-0 defeat at AFC Bournemouth the weekend before while the Under-12 side twice came back from behind to draw 2-2 with Macauley Ley grabbing both goals for Port Talbot. The Under-14 side were defeated 2-1 in a game they more than controlled against a Llanelli side coached by former Llanelli and Newport County striker Mark Dickeson. The three sides are now in action away at Principality Welsh Premier League side Airbus UK Broughton on Sunday, 16th September.
30th August 2007 Academy Update from the Under-14s Port Talbot Town Under-14 Academy side defeated Pontardawe Town 2-1 on Thursday night in a friendly match with goals from Ryan Morgan and a free kick from Sam Hodge. 18th July 2007 Academy Director Huw Lloyd looks ahead Welcome to my first Blues academy report of the season. Our academy has been running for 5 years under the leadership of Mr. Eddie Phillips and Mr. Neil Jones and the various coaches and played 12 games a season against League of Wales academies. The time and effort that these people have put into the academy has been invaluable and has made my job of developing the academy a lot easier. I THANK them for that, long may it continue. The close season has been very busy as we have decided that from this season our 12, 14 & 16 teams will only play academy football against other football academies and centres of excellence. This will incur additional travelling costs and we have been busy raising funds to cover these cost. We held a race night at the club which was a great success and we would like to thank the sponsors, coaches, junior teams, parents and those who attended for their support, it is much appreciated. If any one is interested in sponsoring our junior or academy teams or the academy in any form please let me know. We play our first game, away against AFC Bournemouth, on 25th August. This will be a great experience for the boys and is the type of game that we want to be involved in. We follow this up with games against TNS and Newtown scheduled for September. We are awaiting the fixture list from the FAW and the English leagues to confirm other such matches. I am at present in discussion with various contacts made over the years for a schedule for the coming season. All information of our games will be shown on this page and also on the academy page of the Welsh Premier League match programme. The coaches have not had much time off in the close season as they have been away on educational weekends in Denbigh and Llanelli on the relevant FAW courses they have to obtain to coach in the academy. Congratulation to Mr. Chris Rees our under 16s coach who has passed the FAW/UEFA B licence and is the first coach to achieve this from our academy. Well done Chris.
The coaching staff for the coming season are as follows
Under 19 - Mr. Keith Hanford, assisted by Mr. Huw Morgan Under 16 - Mr. Chris Rees, assisted by Mr. Mal Williams Under 14 - Mr. Mark Pike, assisted by Mr. Mark Pursey Under 12 - Mr. David Davies, assisted by Mr. David Prosser
If anyone wishes to know any further information regarding the academy do not hesitate to contact any of the academy staff. Huw Lloyd Academy Director
6th June 2007 A look back at our Under-14 Academy team’s recent successes To start I would like to say a huge thank you from myself and on behalf of the players to RE/MAX Estate Agents of Morriston for their sponsorship this season, their support has played an important part in our success and we are extremely grateful. Our Under-14 side have enjoyed an absolute cracker of season yet again and more than followed on from their success of the previous season. After winning the treble last season the side again dominated and remained undefeated over the course of their league campaign with seventeen victories and a single draw, once again claiming the double. The squad have been together since the tender age of six and have been absolutely magnificent each and every season, to win the UEFA Mitre Cup last summer, win the league and cup double in two consecutive seasons, being undefeated in the league and reaching the final of the South Wales Cup are all magnificent achievements and I am extremely proud of the side. The biggest highlight for me personally however was the brave step to take the side to France for an invitation only tournament last Easter and compete against some of the biggest clubs in Europe. The first European victory at the tournament was a massive boost for the players who showed great courage to finish the tournament in a credible eleventh place, just behind AFC Bournemouth and in taking the tournament favourites all the way in a game they could and should have won. There is nothing better than seeing talented kids stepping up and performing on the big stage. Mark Pike, Team Manager.
